I do throw in a handful of New Age/early NAC cuts (Yanni, Ray Lynch, Susan Ciani, Checkfield, David Arkenstone, David Lanz, etc.) to change pace. But my presentation is mostly mid-tempo and upbeat instrumental and vocal cuts. But you can forget about the heavy R&B/Urban sound, though. Not that I don't necessarily like that music, but we have enough of those stations already. I am going in a completely different direction. Not sure where it is going to take me yet, but only time will tell.

The Harmonic Lounge started out and ran for 2 years as a 3 hour show that featured the softer side of the contemporary instrumental/vocal format such as Yanni and William Ackerman. The full time Lounge presentation is now more robust but I will be adding the original Lounge music back in very soon. You'll be able to get it twice each weekend as "Sunday At The Lounge". Once from 8am until noon and again from 8pm until midnight with different music in each time slot. Don't have a start date and I'm processing the music as we speak but it's on the top of my list because it's become more evident in the past few weeks for various reasons that this element needs to return and quickly.

Urban music is very cool to play but it depends on what you say is urban. If you tell me it's Billy Paul doing Me & Mrs. Jones or any other of the standard chestnuts that have been burnt to a crisp and don't have a common thread with the rest of the music that gets played, then no, that's not the answer. If it's the Neville Brothers, Tower Of Power, Patti Austin or many others from that list, then it's something you will hear at the Harmonic Lounge. It's very nice to hear Sade and Anita Baker in the right context. If you put the correct stuff around them then they can live a new life. The format was given an urban foundation in the past decade or so by people who had a motive to play within a certain area of the Arbitron ratings so they could maximize their effort with the least work possible. They wanted bodies and this was their answer on how to get them. Nothing wrong with getting listeners and more of them but not their kind who were not engaged or loyal to what you were doing. That was their downside and a big part of the formats demise. I will get a smaller bunch of listeners but they will be more active and loyal to what I do and will respond to what they hear because they will hear something that has their best interest at heart. No more low common denominator foundation. It's now (once again) after intelligent consumers who are searching for music that they want to have as the soundtrack of their life and not just something to use like they would their toaster where there's nothing of value that they can't turn off.

I like some of the early days of smooth jazz as well, I'm talking about the New Age cuts. The former KBZN, in Salt Lake City, used have an hour or two every nite around just new age music. Don't know if some of you remember that or not. I miss that station. :'(

I can't believe I've overlooked this one for so long, but it appears there has been a French smooth jazz station right here in my hometown of Montreal, Canada for quite a while now.

Planete Jazz 91.9 (CKLX-FM) has been on the air since 2004, and they began as a traditional jazz format branded as Couleur Jazz 91.9. In 2008, they relaunched as Planete Jazz 91.9 with a smooth jazz format.

In addition to smooth jazz, CKLX also plays some blues music. They air a blues show called Midnight Blues, which runs from midnight to 1 AM.

For more information about Planete Jazz, check out their website (in French) at http://www.planetejazz.ca/. They also stream online, and provide podcasting. Definitely worth adding to the list.
