Snagged a translator via Es

The Es are really in here in SE Wi.

On my way home from work, in Fontana, WI, about 3:05 CST, the wife & I were listening to our usual WLWK Milwaukee, when some other station started overriding The Lake's signal.

I got some national ads and a promo giving the WFLA website.

The only listing for WFLA on 94.5, is a 10-watt translator from Gulfport, FL 1,068 miles away. I know we both heard the ID, but I have a very heard time believing our stock '02 Chevy radio could pull that off.

There were, indeed Es from that area at the time. I also heard WFLZ & WPOI.

There was also an unID'd "Rock 93-5" in there, too.

My question is: Has anyone else caught such a low-powe signal at such a distance?

94.5 is not a 10-watt xlator, it is WFLF in Parker, FL [near Panama City]. Nice catch however!

There is, fwiw, a classic rocker from Port St. Joe, FL, WPBH. A quick Google has them using Rock 93.5

Port St. Joe is near that line and distance, DX720

Nothing definite, naturally. Maybe if you wrote down some tunes they'd know more.

There oughta be a law, not just because it affects DXers, that corporations cease-and-desist this practice of calling multiple radio stations with the same call letters--in this case, "WFLA". We know the stations are in Fla. No need to drive it home.

There is only *one* true WFLA on radio, and that's AM 970 Tampa. If they wanna simulcast on a local FM (NOT a translator) and call it WFLA-FM there in Tampa, fine.

In Ft Lauderdale we used to have three WFTL's....640, 850, and 1400. I know that it's for writing in rating books "WFTL" that the owner supposedly ka-chings, but I mean really.....

Sorry to the OP that your hopes got too high :(

Thanks, guys.

Crainbebo...According to Radio locator, there is a 10-watt translator at 94.5 for WFLA, so I was fooled. I also saw WFLF, but ignored it for the simple reason that it had different call letters...not realizing WFLA's programs may also be carried on a station that far from Tampa.

CD...I wholeheartedly agree with you about single identity for multiple stations. We have WCPT from Chicago that, in addition to AM 850, also has 3 suburban FMs that carry on the WCPT moniker.

Steve...we first noticed The Beatles' "Get Back", then the Rock 93-5 liner, followed by Boston's "Feelin Satisfied"...Then it was gone.

^ These "WFLA"s are NOT in parallel at all. Each are meant to serve their own community....of course many shows are on satellite and run altogether on many of the same stations, but they do break up at the top of the hour for their own areas.

That's my main beef. IF they wanna call it "The WFLA Network" when co-joined for a program or two, I guess that's okay. But simply "WFLA," no.

During an unusually strong and lengthy Es event in early June, I ID'ed a 250w translator from Irving, TX at 1037.3 miles. The TOH ID only identified the host station, KDKR, but it was on their translator on 99.9.

WCPT-AM is on AM 820. AM 850 is WAIT. The WAIT call letters have been moved from 820 to 850 & back a few times already. Rumor has it that WCPY Dekalb might get sold, & removed from the FM trimulcast. Whoever the new owners are for WCPY might be, might try to get the WDEK call letters back, & program it locally.

To the OP who caught a translator from huundreds of miles away, that's amazing. I have yet to catch any out of market translators on the radio, but remember in the analog days, catching some of Weigel Broadcasting's translators on TV, for when they simulcasted WCIU to South Bend, IN (what I usually caught), but they also had translators in Milwaukee, & Rockford, IL. WCIU used to have the list displayed at the top of the hour. For some translators in my area, not all ID at the top of the hour (I forgot how often a day, but it's not every hour like Class A, B1, B, C3, C2, C1, C0, & C stations). In the case of W240BJ Crown Point, IN (simulcast of WTMK Lowell, IN, but has a CP to change their COL & tower location to Wanatah, IN), it ID's at the top of the hour with WTMK. WTMK is a simulcast of WONU Kankakee, IL on 89.7, as part of Shine FM.

Thanks, Dave, for correcting me. My bad! I should've caught my typo. I think WCPT went to 820 in January or February of '08.

It would be nice is WCPY once again, became independent. I don't need to hear all 4 of the Chicago's Progressive Talk stations. Also, the 4 K-Love stations, & the 10 NPR affiliates I hear here.

As you can see, I'm not a fan of radio sameness.

Oops...Almost forgot the 3 Family Radio's
