Snapshot of new 93.1 in Columbia. Thoughts?

Played in order:

Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly
Something Beautiful - needtobreathe (contemporary Christian recurrent)
For Once In My Life - Stevie Wonder
Baby Don't Go - (not Sonny & Cher and not that song, but it was a non-charting duet, perhaps a shag song)
Carrie Anne - Hollies
This Train Don't Stop There Anymore - Elton John
Little Darlin' - Marvin Gaye

A couple of good songs there. Anything Contemporary Christian isn't going to work for me.

WWNU wasn't that great but I'm just glad I don't live there.

If Mike is looking to plug a hole musically, how about a true oldie, goldie format? I know it's not a ratings buster, but it would create some stability in the station's music direction. Sure, it's an older demographic, but it would tie in nicely with that hometown Lexington County feel. In any case, I wish Mike the best and I admire what he is doing.

"Oldies" are you kidding me? what is the demo for Lexington? Has no one been to the Lexington Chamber web site...lets look at the demo;
Population, 2011 estimate
267,129

Population, percent change, April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2011
1.8%

Persons under 5 years, percent, 2011
6.6%

Persons under 18 years, percent, 2011
24.2%

Persons 65 years and over, percent, 2011
12.6%

Female persons, percent, 2011
51.1%

White persons, percent, 2011
81.3%

Black persons, percent, 2011
15.0%

In 2000, the median age of the population was 36. The
median age in 2010 is estimated to be 39 and it is
predicted to change in five years to 40 years.

In 2010, females represented 51.4% of the
population with a median age of 41 and males
represented 48.6% of the population with a median age
of 38 years.

In 2010, the most prominent age group in this
geography is Age 45 to 54 years. The age group least
represented in this geography is Age 75 + years.

So...how do you see "Oldies" working? ???
Females represented 51.4% of the population with a median age of 41.
If 93.1 is smart they will change fast to a Hot AC/Top40 station. unless they are a bunch of monkeys.

I don't know of alot of 45-54 year olds who listen to top 40. But thanks for the research numbers as it solidifies the case for an oldies format.

45-54 sure is not an oldies demo. Buddy Holly is 70+

45+ is some sort of classic hits with an era core in the 1970's

There is an AC Pure buzzing around lately at the water cooler that is essentially the way Hot AC was considered to be in the mid 90s before it started introducing crossover rhythmic stuff and became what the current Hot AC charts reflect. It's target is the 41 year old female professional.

I wouldn't be so much concerned about the fact that a song is Contemporary Christian. To me, it just sounds kind of weird to have any newish song in what otherwise looks like oldies.

Wouldn't that be a Year 2012 updated version of the old Format 41?

;D

Lol. Actually, strange as it may seem, that thought occurred to me when I first heard about it(plus Format 41 and AC Pure both have Dial Global connections), but WNOK(circa 1990s) modeled itself after Star 94 Atlanta at the time...which, for all intents and purposes was Hot AC from 6a-7p M-F, at least. Other than a few minor modifications, the AC Pure I'm hearing about isn't dissimilar from the WNOK/Star Hot AC from that era...

Current sampling:

KellyClarkson-Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)
Carly Rae Jepsen-Call Me Maybe
Adele-Rumour Has It
Maroon 5-Payphonef/Wiz Khalifa
Katy Perry-The One That Got Away
Fun-We AreYoung

00s sampling:

Train-Hey, Soul Sister
Lady Antebellum-Need You Now
Colbie Caillat-Bubbly
Fergie-Big Girls Don't Cry(Personal)
Uncle Kracker-Smile
Daniel Powter-Bad Day

90s sampling:

Santana w/Rob Thomas-Smooth
No Doubt-Don’t Speak
Aerosmith-I Don't Want To Miss A Thing
Jimmy Cliff-I Can See Clearly Now
Natalie Imbruglia-Torn
Donna Lewis-I Love You Always Forever
Edwin McCain-I’ll Be

80s sampling:

Simple Minds-Don't You (Forget About Me)
Eurythmics, Sweet Dreams(Are Made Of This)
Tom Petty, Free Fallin’
George Michael-Faith
Michael Jackson-Billie Jean

It appears Mike is steering things in that direction... including "Z93 the Lake" jingles.

I guess the only thing that I would be worried about in heading in that direction is that there is the risk of being perceived as a second-rate B106 or Steve-FM. Both of those stations have the resources and heavy research behind them. Knowing that, I would put all my efforts in Lexington-only full-service elements in as many of the dayparts as I could.

I wasn't necessarily talking about Mike's station(though I've spoken to him and have a good idea of his desired musical direction for his station. I committed a foul and was actually going off thread a tad by addressing the 41 year old female target demo comment someone had referenced earlier. My bad.

Everything Ssummers referenced is exactly what WTCB is doing now under Cumulus. So if they are thinking that way at 93.1, that would be a big mistake. It appears WOMG is now doing more of what WTCB used to do and WTCB is sounding much more current. I listened to WTCB some yesterday and I think I heard one seventies song.

Bugz, I thought the same thing about TCB. It appears to be working, since they had their best trends in years. However, I am sure they've shocked the blue hairs and "Lifestyle City Magazine" types that have listened to them for decades.

Success for 93.1 will be a music mix with enough broad appeal for the Lexington/Lake Murray area that serves as a glue for Lexington/Lake Murray news, information and service elements.

I agree Dudefan on the programming side. But do they have the sales team to make it work? Are the owners out selling it themselves? Do they have day jobs or does this have their full attention?

Funny you mention that. The AC Pure I've been talking about has a smattering of well researched 70s songs, too. I was going to mention it, but I didn't think anyone would believe me. Now I know. lol
