"SNL 40"...Your Take?

Who else here watched the SNL: 40 special on NBC Sunday night? I felt much of the first half of the show was better than the second half.

Who the f--- allowed Kanye West to be part of this? At least Mike Meyers ripped on him during the "Wayne's World" sketch!

All the hype about Eddie Murphy appearing for the first time in 30-some years seemed to get cut short so Miley Cyrus could sing. Who the f--- allowed her on there? Sheesh!

The segment for those who passed on was nice, but an entire piece for Don Pardo would've been MUCH better.

Betty White saved an otherwise dreadful "The Californians" sketch. OK...what's your opinion?
I agree Eddie Murphy shouln't have gotten cut off like that.

"The Californians" has always been dreadful.

Watched about 5 or so secs of the opening...cannot stomach much more of Fallon than that....McCartney really was thin in his voice and his mic needed better adjustment...but he needs to retire....geesh he is over 70 now...its not the same...

Chevy Chase's appearance was a shocker..in the lack of audience reaction.....just minor clapping...SHAME!!!

Yeah, Eddie's limited then cut away was another poor thorn....and Miley Cyrus doing a Paul Simon top40 song from the 70s? (50 Ways to leave your lover)???? I finally gagged and barfed on that...

Spent more time watching Family Guy on FOX and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network than I did the SNL special...it was just AWFUL overall...I would have expected a better "tribute" to those passed than whatever they did...and trying get "Chris Farley" channeled was a total loss...He and others are gone....do NOT trash them by trying to imitate them....I would have been much happier with a show full of old clips instead of the mess they showed..

The ONLY GOOD thing (besides the end of it) was the Wayne's World skit...it was pretty much spot on...and yes Kanye should have been NOT there....SMH

Overall, a 5....wait that may be too good of a score...maybe a negative 5!!
I had to skip over most of te mjuical acts. I ended up going to bed at nearly midnight as it was and I had to get rid of the show that night or else.

"Wayne's World" was good.

I didn't notice Chevy didn't get respect. He rarely does and I think that's a shame.

I tuned out after "Weekend Update". I only found one of the new sketches funny (Celebrity Jeopardy!), and some of the old clips were nice to watch. The opening number with Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake was ... weird. A lot of the bits felt like they were bringing people on stage just to say they were in the show.
I liked "Celebrity Jeopardy" and always have even though it's so offensive.

I was surprised about "%$#@ in a Box". If a Nixon bobblehead had been inside (after all, Madonna used a stuffed cat in an MTV anniversary celebration) I wouldn't have questioned the use of that word at 8:00.

Though disrespect should never be tolerated - Chevy has been digging his own grave (in terms of respect) for years. For two: there was the incident with the producers of Community, and the unbelievable and history making train wreck that was his short-lived talk show on Fox late night.

One note though - if they were going to re-do a Paul Simon song, they should have had Chevy lip-sync it while Miley Cyrus either sat still in a chair, or maybe twerked all over the stage.

Bad:
-Did anyone notice they completely omitted Cecily Strong from the montage of former Update anchors? She had a good season and a half 2 years ago. You can't tell me they forgot. But they did include a clip of her "Girl you Wish You Hadn't Started A Conversation With At a Party" character in another montage. Strange.
-Paul McCartney sounded horrific.
-Miley Cyrus
-Kanye West
-Christopher Walken butchered "Kanye" when introducing West's performance
-The Californians
-Garth and Kat (during the musical portion)...easily the lamest characters ever and certainly not worthy of an SNL40 appearance. They weren't funny then. They aren't funny now.
-Opera Man (same)
-The Culps--They had their moment back in the day. This moment was not one of them. Will Ferrell had his SNL40 moment with Celebrity Jeopardy so he didn't need this. Ana Gasteyer could have appeared as one of the Delicious Dish girls or something. We know her DD partner, Molly Shannon, was there as Molly appeared as Mary Elizabeth during the Fallon/Timberlake opening number.
-Why in God's name did Eddie Murphy get a standing ovation?? For coming back (for 73 seconds) for the first time in 30+ years??? Robert Di Nero didn't get a standing ovation. Or Jack Nicholson. Not even Keith Richards. But Eddie Murphy?? Could he not have slipped in something Gumby-ish? Or Mister Robinson-ish? No, he just stands there and takes it in and then misses his cue to go to a commercial.
-Chevy Chase

Good:
-Loved seeing Tina/Amy/Jane Curtin on the Update desk.
-Debbie Downer (Rachel Dratch) and Mary Elizabeth (Molly Shannon) during the opening number
-Dan Aykroyd and the Bass O Matic
-The whole Martin Short/Maya-as-Beyoncé musical thing was ok. But I think Martin could have somehow included a little Ed Grimley in there somewhere, I must say!
-Wayne's World. Party on!
-Celebrity Jeopardy. Great to see Darrell Hammond back (and not just announcing) as well as Norm McDonald. Could have done without Kate McKinnon as Beiber. Too new.
-Andy Samberg/Adam Sandler video on castmembers breaking up.
-Norm/Seth/Kevin Nealon and Colin Quinn (who butchered his one line)
-Questions and answers with Jerry Seinfeld
-All the former SNL band leaders
-The tribute to the castmembers and crew who have passed away was very touching.
-Lorne Michaels looking way out of place at the end of show
-Paul Simon was ok but looked way old. I suppose it was good he was there. He may not be around for the 45th or 50th.

Rather than Californians, Kanye or Miley, I would have loved to see:
-Billy Crystal with Fernando's Hideaway
-Dana Carvey's Church Lady
-Ferrell and Cheri Oteri as the cheerleaders (opening the show)
-Dennis Miller

That's about it. I'm Kevin Nealon and that's news to me.

Was there any reaction from Paul Simon on Miley's performance of his song?

Chevy either looked terribly uninterested in even being there or the medication from all those falls from ladders etc. in the early years has taken its toll. Have Chevy and Bill Murray healed their differences? Wasn't there fistacuffs between the two of them backstage in 1977 or 1978 or so?

I thought Paul's performance at the end and acknowledging the band was great. Still Crazy After All These Years was a great way to describe the show after 40 years. And, the song would have been a hit during the 1st or 2nd season so it as appropriate.

I never liked her--either version--but I agree. It was wrong.

I could have done without the music numbers, but the show itself was pretty SPECIAL. And that's what we need, more relevant specials (that are good). The show proves that if you create a GOOD SPECIAL people will watch.

It wasn't bad. But I wished it was better. I didn't understand why Sarah Palin needed to be invited.

There were a few stars like Melissa McCarthy that hosted SNL maybe 2-3 times, but didn't really contribute in the way that a former cast member did also.

Some of the mid 2000 decade cast members like Maya Rudolph get featured prominently on these return shows. But there is a number of newer former cast members that I rarely see on these specials. e.g. Where was Nasim Pedrad? Besides Kristen Wiig, I feel SNL feels that these cast members aren't memorable enough or maybe they had poor departures from the show and the relationship is somewhat sour.

It was great to see Betty White though.

It would have been better if Eddie Murphy performed some skit as well.

I'm also not into the music numbers but I realize that it's an integral part of the show in general, so having it part of the special makes sense that way.
