SNL & Amy Poehler Legacy

Well, on 13 December Saturday Night Live repertory player and Weekend Update co-anchor Amy Poehler announced that would be her last show. It had been reported earlier that Poehler would not be back after having her baby.

Interested how Poehler worked Thursday (23 October), had her son on Saturday (25 October) and returned to work a few weeks later (6 December). I'm sure she wanted to help SNL as much as she could.

So how will history view Amy Poehler on SNL? She did a great job as a player then upped her cred by hosting WU with Tina Fey and Seth Meyes. In my opinion, she is in the upper half of all performers and the upper 1/3 of all female performers. I don't think that Poehler is in the same SNL class as Gilda Radner, Jan Hooks, Molly Shannon, and Maya Rudolph.

So what's your opinion on Amy Poehler's SNL ranking? Thanks

Interested how Poehler worked Thursday (23 October), had her son on Saturday (25 October) and returned to work a few weeks later (6 December). I'm sure she wanted to help SNL as much as she could.

We talked about this at the time. In fact, I started a thread that night (Oct 25th) about that night's SNL. As I recall, she not only worked that Thursday for the Thursday night special, she also worked Friday through rehearsals for that Sat's show and had the baby on Sat morning I believe.

I didn't see last Sat's show. Figures she'd come back on a night I don't watch. But I'm glad she came back to say goodbye.

I always enjoyed her Weekend Update work and some of her sketch work. But they relied on her too much and seeing her in every single sketch was too much. She's in every sketch yet 13 year veteran Darrell Hammond shows up once at around the 12:30 a.m. mark. There's something wrong with that.

I'll remember Molly Shannon (Mary Katharine Gallagher; the "I'm fifty years old" woman); Rachel Dratch (SHE should come back); Jan Hooks; Cheri Oteri; Ana Gasteyer; and, to some extent, even Victoria Jackson, Nora Dunn, and Mary Gross before I remember Amy as a sketch player.

She is a strong asset to SNL. I remember the first time seeing her was in a show called the "Upright Citizen's Brigade" it was on Comedy Central. Very well written and extremely funny.
She is very talented and quick witted. She will be missed heavily just like Tina Fey.
I did hear that she will be back on NBC in a sit-com very soon.

Just the opposite - Fey left SNL a year or two ago to do 30 Rock, and only came back for guest shots to do Palin during the election...for which she was paid very handsomely, I understand. You might see Tina back to host in the future, or to do Palin again in 2012. Pardon the editorial comment, but I personally hope the Republicans come to their senses like they did with Dan Quayle in 1996, and Palin fades into well deserved obscurity up there in the tundra. Then Fey will get to retire her Palin impression permanently.

I also think Poehler is very talented - and hope she's able to find a well-written sit-com worthy of her talents, like Fey did.
