A better show than last week, not perfect, but better.

Hosted by Jon Hamm from 'Mad Men'...I'm not familiar with him and I've never seen the show. They did do a spoof of the show with, apparently, a couple of his real life cast members.

Musical guest Coldplay actually performed THREE times within the show (never seen that before) and played again right after the goodbye but the show cut out just as they started. The lead singer managed to get in a "Barack Obama" at the end of the third performance before his mike was cut. I'd be interested to know if they cut out that couple of seconds in the other time zones.

BIGGEST NEWS: Amy Poehler was missing....she's having a baby! Seth Myers anchored the Update desk alone.

Former castmember Maya Rudolph dropped by to portray Michelle Obama with Fred Armisen's Barack.

Tina Fey did NOT appear this week.
 
I did see Bono and U2 perform three songs on SNL a couple of years ago. They also ended the show as they were performing a song. It seemed like an impromptu segment.

Also when Jon Bon Jovi hosted. They played three songs within the show.

I did think of U2 but really wasn't sure. I vaguely recalled that they ended the show (with credits rolling?) with a song. And I know that Bon Jovi hosted earlier in the year (I believe Foo Fighters were the musical guest?) and he and his band sang at the end of his monologue. But I didn't know that they sang three songs.

And I just read that Amy had a boy (Archie) earlier on Saturday and I guess she had already given birth when SNL hit the airwaves. But Seth Myers merely said she was "having a baby". Amy participated in Thursday's primetime special and was rehearsing Sat's show as late as Friday so she didn't have a chance to say goodbye on-air. I hope that she comes back for one more show to anchor Update and say goodbye or even play guest on the Update desk (maybe even with the baby) to say goodbye. It had previously been reported that she was done with SNL once she gave birth.
 
I wonder why Tina Fey was not on the show. Afterall, she pretty much single handedly has been responsible for the best ratings for SNL in quite some time.

Thoughts? Could McCain's camp have had a hand in the decision??
 
Because Tina has been working three jobs lately:

-motherhood
-writer, producer, star of "30 Rock"
-SNL when they've needed her (which basically means when Gov Palin has been a major part of the news for that week such as the VP debate a couple weeks ago)

They didn't really need her last night. She was just on Thursday night's prime time special (with other special guest Will Ferrell as GW).

No - if the McCain campaign tried to influence NBC to censor Fey, the word would have been leaked somehow, and it would make them look bad. They don't need more bad publicity. The McCain camp probably did push to have Palin appear on the show last week - which made her look like a "good sport." I'm sure NBC and Lorne Michaels couldn't resist that, because it meant higher ratings.

I'd like to think SNL decided this week not to run the Fey-Palin bit into the ground, like they usually do (enough MacGruber, already!). If McCain/Palin manage to pull out a win somehow, expect Fey to return from time to time to skewer the new Vice President.

"Barack Obama" made it through in Central.

COLDPLAY'S LEAD SINGER IS CHRIS MARTIN...and doesn't strike anyone else funny that a Bristish dude makes a comment about our election.
That is the second time I recall a brit making a comment....The british comedian that hosted mtv video awards also made it his duty to comment
on our election process and tell us what we should do. I don't really care that they made statements ( since I don't think anyone should really be swayed
by what a musician or actor or anyone else says). But I do think it speaks to this particular election being a most important one in our lifetime.
Would any of us make a statement in England as to what they should do for a Prime Minister in their elections? I think not.

Great to see Maya back. IMO, Maya is in the top 5 of all SNL female performers ever. No other female had the range of characters, both female and male(!), as Maya. Tina Fey doesn't count, even though she is incredible as Palin, that was her only real role beside co-anchor of Weekend Update.

Looks like NBC is re-running last week's ep tonite from 9:30-11pm EST.

And tonight's (11/1) guest host is Ben Affleck with musical guest David Cook who happens to be the current American Idol. John McCain is supposed to make a cameo. Not sure about Obama.
