SNL last night (1/10)

I hadn't watched the show for a few weeks and, of the ones I had watched, several were disappointing (Michael Phelps for one).

Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) was the guest host and he did a terrific job.

Rachel Maddow of CNN (?) had the opening sketch interviewing disgraced Illinois Governor Rod howeveryouspellhisname (Bill Hader) and his Senate appointee, Roland Burris (Kenan Thompson).

Musical guest Taylor Swift LOOKED terrific as always, just as she did on ABC's NYE show. I wasn't bowled over by either of her performances. She is no Carrie Underwood, that's for sure, but she's young, she can work on that. Taylor was positively giddy and giggly following her first performance. I got the impression (probably incorrectly) that the studio audience gave her a standing ovation but I can't imagine they would have done that.

SNL has added two featured players (Abby Elliot and Michaela Watkins) in addition to Casey Wilson, who does a great job, and Bobby Moynihan.

A sketch on the 4th hour of Today with Kathie Lee Gifford (Kristen Wiig) and Hoda Kotb (either Abby or Michaela) was pretty lame.

However, overall, one of the better SNL's I've seen in a while.

For me, the 'Maddow' opening bit perfectly illustrated the problem with the writing these past few years on SNL. IMO, most SNL skits drag on way too long. This bit was also way too long, but in reverse. The last couple minutes with Jason Sedakis as Blagojevich (sp?) was less than brilliant...but it moved right along and had some real laughs...but the Burris portion with Keenan Thompson could have been cut by 50%.

Well... isn't the fourth hour of the "Today" show supposed to be lame?? I don't even know why they call it the "Today" show. It has no connection that I can tell with the first 3 hours. They might as well call it "Live with Hoda and Kathie Lee"!

Maddow is an MSNBC personality :)

I just watched the opening online and ... wow, that was weak. "Senator" Burris's interview on Face the Nation was funnier. (Although I thought the Burris part of the SNL skit was funnier than the Blagojevich part)

And yes, the TODAY segment was awkward. I won't comment on WMC2006's comment because I tend to think that all four hours of TODAY are to be avoided. I watched about ten minutes on Thursday and Matt Lauer was basically doing a sales pitch for Detroit Automobiles. ::)

Actually, I was home sick one day and tried to watch the 4th hour of Today. The SNL skit was spot on. Kathie Lee is drunk or high on drugs or something. Poor Hoda, an actual journalism, is totally out-of-place on the Kathie Lee trainwreck (also known as the 4th hour of today).

Affleck as Olbermann was way funnier.

Yes he was, although that one went on a tad too long as well. And Affleck couldn't keep a straight face through the whole thing which made it funnier.

To me the last few years haven't been funny because everyone the cast seems to be obviously aware they are saying lines. Like they are waiting for the audience to react.

It's one thing to get a laugh and wait for it to subside, it's another to have the look "Oh I'm gonna deliver a punch line now, let's wait for the laugh."

It seems to have gone from actors being on a show to actors saying "Wow what else will this show lead to?"

I finally had the chance to watch it and overall it gets a Thumbs Down for me.

I was excited when I heard Neil Patrick Harris was going to host. By the way, he's done a great job reinventing his career which could have easily been the next guest at Celebrity Rehab. Most of the skits were too long and not very funny.

Did Keenan Thompson wear the same wig 3 times and the same bald head 3 times? The Today Show was okay and Kristen Wiig's Kathie Lee was funny but went way too long. I thought the Broadway shows had potential.

Hard to believe it's been 8 years since SNL's had a solo anchor on Weekend Update. Seth Meyers is okay but I'm waiting for his partner. I wonder if he'll get teamed up with someone next season.

We'll see how well Rosario Dawson will do this Saturday.

The Digital Short could have been better, but I did like the Broadway sketch. Darrell Hammond is still not being used often enough. Neil's monologue implied that Fred Savage was going to make a cameo, but he never did. At least we got Andy's Samberg's impersonation of Mark Wahlberg. Good stuff! The Two First Names sketch was somewhat good...at first. Speaking of SNL, is Robert Smeigel no longer a part of the show? I never see a cartoon any more. The best ones had to be The X Presidents, anything with Ace and Gary and the Saturday morning cartoon spoof with Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. :)

If the skits were shortened then they would have to use more creativity to make more funny skits!

I also thought Savage might appear. Two First Names was okay.

Favorite TV Funhouses are The Ambiguously Gay Duo (Safety Tips being the best), Journey to Disney Vault and Shazzang the torturing Genie. Never liked Real Audio.

You never liked Real Audio? OK, I didn't like them all either, but the one they did around the time of the Clinton/Lewinsky mess was awesome! :)
