SNL Sat 11/1

Senator John McCain appeared in the opening sketch with Tina Fey as Governor Palin. The gist was that their campaign was low on cash (like in real life) so they are doing a campaign commercial in cooperation with QVC and they need to sell QVC products at the same time. It was pretty amusing. Cindy McCain appeared for a few seconds as the smiling model showing off the Fine Gold jewelry (as in McCain-Fiengold Bill).

McCain came back later for Weekend Update. His part was pretty good although Weekend Update was missing a little something....namely, Amy. Amy was alluded to as Kristen Wiig appeared as Amy's movie reviewer Aunt Linda. Whaaaaaaaaaaat? I have a feeling this may have been the last appearance of Aunt Linda. I could have done without the Voting Machine Problem Brothers singing and more of Seth.

Ben Affleck hosted and couldn't seem to keep a straight face during many of his sketches.

The Target sketch bombed. I usually like the Target sketches (Kristen Wiig as the Target cashier) but this one was horrid.

However, I enjoyed Affleck as Keith Olbermann.

Musical guest and current American Idol David Cook was ok.

Darrell Hammond appeared in his weekly post-midnight 5 seconds in a sketch.

Next live show is in two weeks. Paul Rudd hosts and the lovely Beyonce sings.

Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight. Enjoy your extra hour ;D

Yes they are. It's a 2 hour special from 9-11 with "special guests". However, as far as I know, it's not live and it's not first-run stuff. Seeing the promo for it during the show last night, I got the impression that it was a mix of all the campaign/presidential stuff they've already shown during the season.

But.....I could be wrong. ;D

It's likely to be like their other recent pre-Election Night specials...highlights from the current year, plus a few older Presidential sketches...likely to be some Carvey-as-Perot-and-George-Bush-I in there, possibly the Al Gore 'lockbox', and maybe even the one with Dan Aykroyd as Jimmy Carter doing a radio-call-in show, and displaying his knowledge of illegal drugs.

I give the 1 November SNL a slight thumbs up.

John McCain did a great job. I read that he seemed relaxed even after a full day of campaigning and he looked like he was having fun. He demonstrated his comedy when he hosted a few years ago. I think Cindy McCain should have at least said something!

This was Ben Affleck's 4th time hosting and did a good job. He did a great Alec Baldwin and Keith Olbermann, but I think the Olbermann skit went on too long.

I'm not sure how many of you watch David Alan Grier's show Chocolate News on Comedy Central, but Kenan Thompson's Love skit was similar to something Grier did on 29 October.

Having Aunt Linda and Target Lady is too much for one episode.

I think the rest of the sketches were okay. I liked the premise of Night School Musical.

Finally, kind of I'm surprised that they haven't pair Seth Meyers with another anchor while Amy Poehler is on maternity leave. I liked Horatio Sanz but he didn't do a good job for subbing for Tina Fey while she was on her leave. I believe this marks the first time since 2000 that Weekend Update has had a solo anchor.

She's not on maternity leave from the show. She's just on maternity leave from "the business". She's not coming back to SNL at all. That has been widely reported many many many times. Given that she didn't have a chance to say goodbye, however, I do hope she comes back one last time for a farewell Update.

Along the same lines, Lorne Michaels has reported publicly that Seth Myers will host Update alone for the rest of the season.

From what I understood, Poehler was leaving SNL after the birth of her baby. I was mistaken by calling it maternity leave. But did you notice that she is still in the opening credits and listed as co-anchor for Weekend? For someone is "...not coming back to SNL at all" is unusual. While I can't be certain, the last time a performer announced he was leaving mid-season was Dana Carvey, which was in line with the 1992 Presidential election. I can't remember if they showed him for the rest of the season.

You're right. I was surprised they included her in the Weekend Update opening. I'm guessing they aren't, or haven't gotten around to, re-working the opening credits. Not sure if they can just drop her from the opening pics or not although I think they deleted Maya Rudolph last year after she left when she had her baby. I believe she never came back after the writer's strike or something.

I don't recall Dana Carvey leaving mid-season. I do remember Norm MacDonald leaving mid-season because he was fired and replaced at the Update desk by Colin Quinn.

I can't remember when Rudolph had her maternity leave if they left her name on the opening. She didn't come back after the writer's strike. They might have also kept Tina Fey's name while she was gone. Like mentioned previously, on W.U. they used Horatio Sanz name instead of Fey since he was co-anchoring.

I remember Carvey leaving in 1992 because it was a big deal. Carvey was arguable the biggest star on SNL at the time (Phil Hartman could also be named) and Carvey was doing both President Bush and Ross Perot. Carvey decided to leave after inauguration, no matter who won the presidency.

McDonald did get fired from W.E. and was replaced by Colin Quinn. McDonald stayed for the rest of the 1997-1998 season.

It went in some interesting directions, playing off KO's tendency for hyperbole, and really exaggerating his solemn, serious, 'This is my grown up face' delivery, while ignoring the 'goofy sportscaster' persona altogether:
