SNL sponsored by Budweiser Golden Wheat (10/17)

*Show is ongoing as I type this*

For the 3rd week in a row, Fred Armisen opened the show as Barack Obama. Fortunately, he didn't last long in the sketch as Obama got mad and morphed, Hulk-like, into 'The Rock' Obama, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson coming in and reprising his 'The Rock Obama' character from the last time he hosted last year. Maybe the producers knew that viewers were fed up with Armisen's lame portrayal. The sketch didn't get much better though. Bad opening.

Thanks to Budweiser as the sole sponsor, we get to see previously unaired dress rehearsal footage from over the years which, so far, have included a hilarious Tim Meadows/Chris Rock/"Perspectives" sketch and other stuff with Rob Schneider, Darrell Hammond, Will Ferrell, and others.

Sad to say that these old clips will probably be the highlight of the whole show.

A "Beauty and the Beast" sketch wasn't too bad with guest host Gerard Butler.

Musical guest Shakira just performed her first song. She looked fantastic as she strutted around half-dressed and she pretended to sing but pretty much looked like a complete lip-synch without even trying.

Best part of Weekend Update was Kristin Wiig as the woman suffering from PGAD (Permanent Genital Arousal Disorder). Yup, gotta see it. Update is followed by a couple of Seth Myers/Amy Poehler dress rehearsal clips (sponsored by your good friends at Budweiser Golden Wheat).

The rest of the show was mediocre at best.

Shakira was still half-dressed for her 2nd performance. She did a better job singing/looking like she was singing but I (and probablly most guys) were focusing on something else.

At the end of show goodbyes, there was no thanks to Bud for sponsoring the show but it was mentioned, right after the opening skit, that Bud was indeed sponsoring and generously gave up some of their ad time to sponsor those unaired clips.

The show is in repeats until November 7th when Taylor Swift will serve as both host and musical guest.

No doubt these clips will be edited out when this episode is repeated later.

Out of curiosity, I wonder how Global in Canada handled this show, especially since Bud Golden Wheat is not available there yet? I would figure they would cut to their own commercials as SNL went to "break".

Also out of curiosity, were there still local breaks for local commercials, or did Bud commandeer all commercial slots, national and local?

Yes, there were breaks for local commercials.

Yes, and national as well because I recall a Jeep commercial near the end of the show.

The previously unaired dress rehearsal stuff was the funniest part of the show. Opening sketch? Lame. B and the B sketch? It was okay. WU was good thanks only to Kristen Wiig. She's very talented, by the way.

To me, funniest bit was the rehearsal footage from sometime in the mid-90s when the robot tried to burst through the wall and got stuck! And the head started to come off revealing who was inside! That one had me laughing out loud and waking the wife who had fallen asleep a couple of sketches earlier.

They need a new Obama - Fred Armisen isn't pulling it off very well. And it's funnier when they aren't idolizing the president, a mode they slipped back into last night.

Maybe CNN needs to "fact check" his performance each week! ;)

And for each reference to Kanye West or an MTV awards show, take one drink of Budweiser Golden Wheat! ;)

Overall, I give the 17 October SNL a Thumb Up.

I agree that the unaired dress rehearsals were great and probably the funniest part of the show. I've always liked the 2 New Jersey guys. I forgot to check if the character from the Ghetto Champagne and BET show by Keenan Thompson were the same person. I liked both skits. Beauty & the Beast was funny.

I'm not sure what's going on with Fred Armisen's Barack Obama. Last year he nailed the character. Now it seems that he's not even trying hard. I wonder if he doesn't like the material he has to do or doesn't like Obama?

Finally, while I think Kristen Wiig is a great talent, must she be in almost every skit? I wouldn't have been surprised if she was dressed as a man in the 300 and Daveheart skits. How can any other female get a chance when Wiig is everywhere? An example is during the monologue someone else could have done the knife fight. Entertainment Weekly #1071 had a good article on Wiig. Lorne Michaels said she is in the top three women who ever appeared on SNL and said the only other person who he knew he would instantly hire was Dana Carvey. High praise.

I also agree that Wiig is a great talent. She'll go far. But I have to say - the skit where she played the brain damaged (hit by lightning) secretary was painful to watch. Why does Lorne Michaels let these one-joke skits go on for so long? It would have been much funnier at half the length.

On the plus side - the Beauty and the Beast skit probably got more laughts out of me than anything SNL has done in years.

Another talent to watch is Bill Hader, who is doing a lot of supporting roles in films, including Judd Apatow comedies.

The writers really typecast her. It seems like every character she plays is a spastic, socially-inept, chatterbox loser. She deserves better.

Experiencing a slight production delay, now that they have to send scripts to Rahm Emmanuel for pre-approval ;)
