Snoopy Gets A New Owner

United Media Licensing, which owns the "Peanuts" brand, has been sold by The E.W. Scripps Co. to the Iconix Brand Group for $175 million. However, Scripps will continue to own and operate United Media's syndication operation, though it is not known if it's a sign that they will discontinue the "Peanuts Classics" comic strip.

And to make this relevant to television, one wonders if this means different broadcasting deals for the "Peanuts" TV specials. At any rate, this kind of reminds me of when all of the PBS stations eventually phased the late "Mister Rogers" out of their schedules.

I hope so; ABC butchered "A Charlie Brown Christmas" this past year. I bought the DVD for future years' viewing.

Who butchered what? 30 minutes is 30 minutes. Ads have to be thrown in some place. How long is the dvd version of the special?

25 minutes. There were fewer commercials per half hour in 1966.
 
There are two cuts of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" that ABC showed last year. One is the full version of the 1966 show that goes over the 30 minute mark because of ad breaks and then they throw in a series of Christmas Peanuts shorts that were made in the 80's to fill the rest of the hour.

The 30 minute version does cut a few minutes out to fit in the shorter window and provide the commercial load. This is the version that appears "butchered".

If the schedule says 1 hour, not butchered
30 minutes, butchered.

You're probably better off watching it on dvd then. There always seem to be a bunch of Peanuts dvds packaged together during the various holidays. Trying to watch any Peanuts special on ABC these days is almost pointless due to more commercials and the usual pop-up ad/promo logo running around bs.
