Snow GONE!!! KTAR Lineup Changes!!

This just in from Bonneville:

KTAR Responds to Demand for More Local Programming:
Pat McMahon & 620 Sportsline Back, Search On for Other Hosts

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – NewsRadio 620 KTAR announces the station will become the Valley’s only station with a completely local news and talk lineup on weekdays.
In dramatic fashion, the past few weeks have demonstrated how Arizona needs a station devoted to talking about the issues its residents care about. Through a landmark simulcast with a leading Spanish language station and with 13 hours of continuous coverage of the state’s largest demonstration ever, KTAR has taken
the lead in a time of historic events. After witnessing the market’s response and recognizing the station’s unique ability to lead, KTAR is announcing this complete commitment to local programming.
Beginning Monday, April 17th, Pat McMahon will return to the daily programming line-up (9 a.m. -12p.m.) and The 620 Sportsline returns with Dave Burns as host (7-9 p.m.). The station also announces an immediate search for talent to host local talk shows from 1-4 p.m. and 9 p.m.-12 a.m. As part of this lineup change, Arizona’s Afternoon News with Ted & Heidi will expand (4-7pm). KTAR thanks Ted Simons for the double duty he has been pulling, filling-in as host of the 1-4 p.m. slot while also co-anchoring Arizona’s Afternoon News. This move allows Ted to focus on the expanded afternoon news product.
KTAR Vice President/Market Manager Erik Hellum emphasizes, “Our listeners have been telling us they expect us to be local, and recent events in Phoenix have convinced us that they are right. We are proud to be the only station in the Valley providing live and local programming all day; starting Monday.”

Note to Michael Hagerty

Now that McMahon goes back to full-time at KTAR, what's happening with the 9am time slot on AZ-TV? Another hour of religious programming? Perry Mason reruns? The Rockford Files?

The Michael Hagerty Show?

How about another hour of "Good Morning Prescott"?

I know, a low blow. Sorry Michael. But at least
it's serving your COL, something I can't say for
certain other stations.

Does KPNX Mesa/Phoenix (the correct legal, not the
one they use) still grudgingly do the once a year
live auction for a Mesa non-profit organization?

Or if you can't come up with anything else (and
Michael, this radio reference might help offset
my indiscretion above), how about:

"Another hour of...music pow-pow-powerrrrrr"?
Edited by oldiesfan on 04/13/06 03:29 AM.

Ok I need to ask this question, why Mcmahon??? I would think they would go with someone a little bit younger than Mcmahon. I guess they are going for the sun city crowd but had hoped for someone on the younger end. Also I thought the sportsline has been on KTAR all this time. It has been called the night shift but night shift or sportsline, isn't it the same program hosted by burns? Hmmmmm will be interesting to see who else they pick to fill the local shoes in early pm and late evening.

How 'bout Jay Lawerence or Michael Dixon? It's total capitulation to KFYI almost six years since Five-50 started kicking their ass. Stick a fork in KT'R, they're done!

Let me see if I have this right. KTAR, on the losing end of the battle with KFYI decides to fight back with a bit player on a 1950's kids TV show against Barry Young and Rush Limbaugh. Doesn't Bonneville still have it's pre-recorded music tapes for stations as lost as this one?

Are there too many 30-year olds listening to KTAR anyway? McMahon may not be the best choice, but it's good to see live/local 'til midnight, which is increasingly becoming a rare distinction. Now if they could only get rid of the six-hour old Larry King Live simulcast.

As much as I like local stuff, why put Pat McBland back on? He is the Merv Griffin of talk radio, dull, deadly dull. Smarmy as hell, more interested in being a socialite than interesting.

As for Host TBD, find someone new, don't give it to one of the TAR backup team. If Gaydos or Femino are on daily, it will cause accidents from people asleep at the wheel.

3 hours of Ted & Heidi? I can just feel the brain cells dying.

KTAR Lineup Change

WOW... A brilliant move for 620! McMahon can help recapture SO MANY of the listeners that dropped off the planet with the years of Miss Management. I just hope they find some NEW talent for the other shifts.

They have to stop recycling hosts from the past!

BTW... who is the ballsy new guy on the station commercials? When he says "This is KTAR" you know it! What a strong voice for the station... they sound like they have a pulse again...

Finally, is their new PD available? I'm still looking!

Eric: Nope. The Pat McMahon Show. Pat will tape here from 7-8 AM, then drive to KTAR for his radio show.
As for your alternate program choices, I should point out that we've cut our religious programming by more than half since January (now down to 2 hours per day, 7-9AM), and the modernization of our lineup continues. Perry Mason has been replaced by Frasier. Over the next few months, According To Jim, The Brady Bunch, Cheers and The George Lopez show will arrive.

Oldiesfan: You may have considered it a low blow when you wrote it, but AM Arizona is a solid show that, as you've noted, serves our COL. In fact, it goes beyond that, serving a rapidly growing market (Yavapai County is now more than 200,000 people and climbing rapidly)...not just Prescott, but also Sedona and Flagstaff (which is losing its only local television with the sale of KNAZ). And, AM Arizona does alright in the DMA. On Tuesday, April 11, it was only 4/10ths of a point behind Montel Williams on FOX10. It often is less than half a point behind the court shows on KUTP and WB6. Tonya Mock and Lew Rees do a good show, and the audience is discovering that on a daily basis.

We're thrilled for Pat McMahon, happy that we can continue our relationship with him while he goes home to KTAR on a fulltime basis, and I personally believe Russ and Erik made exactly the right call.

!!! KTAR lineup CHANGES !!!

> This whole thing shows KTAR has balls. I like balls.

i'd like to hear a 620 roundtable, 9 - noon; with rotating hosts.

a different pair of hosts daily..

bruce kelly & terry gilberg with guest

charles goyette & pat mcmahon with guest

kari dozer & bill heywood with guest

on the days they're not hosting, they can be out in the field producing special features & commentaries to air througout the day.

the 620 roundtable could be live, on-location; with an open-mic setup for listeners questions & comments as the pass by.

i like the idea of tuning-in NOT KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT.

Holy f***, what a horrible idea. Sure, Pat McMahon is counterprogramming to the likes of Barry and Rush, but come on! The is-it-raining-where-you-are talk radio that McMahon delivers will never win against the real passion, emotion, and humor at 550am. KTAR deserves every a**kicking that KFYI is sure to give them.

Their new voice guy is great, though.

It sounds like McMahon will be competing against himself on radio and TV! I suspect two different audiences though.

Not to mention the obvious appeal of a million dollars in salaries for a midmorning show.

It's about time they start to inch toward the authorative model started by Jacor that has kept heritage stations in the midwest (WLW, WTVN, et al) thriving; finally a voice talent that conveys an image of strength rather than some mealy-mouthed sameness.

Wait! What do you mean, KNAZ is going dark????????

Can't be true, and if it is, that is a indeed a bummer for all of us up here in the northland.

Rickity: It's not going dark, but Gannett put KNAZ up for sale back in December. So far, the rumored interested parties are religious broadcasters, who won't likely do any local programming.

Which means he won't be competing against himself.

Radio tends to be a mobile medium. TV isn't (yet). Pat's show here will continue to be guest-based. I'd bet on the new radio show to be a lot more phone-intensive. Two different shows for two different audiences in different listening/viewing environments.
