So 3 Weeks In, How's Jay Doing?

So after about three weeks, what does everyone think about The Jay Leno Show?

Are the regular bits working? I know Leno is into cars, but is making celebrities race cars around a track funny? Is "Earn Your Plug" working?

Do I suspect "Jaywalking" might be staged? Now that the show is so comedy-dependent, can we send Jay out for an hour or two and not get many good Jaywalking individuals? Could they be planting some people on street corners for Jay to run into? Jay might be willing to work 16 hours a day but he can't come back from a Jaywalking expedition with no good tape. When he has dumb people play Jeopardy, are all those answers spontaneous? Or am I too suspicious?

And how are the ratings? I heard the first week, when the other networks were still in summer reruns, Jay did great. But since Jay is now opposite season premieres and first run shows, he's often in a distant third place. And is that hurting the NBC affiliates late news and Conan?

The opening week numbers are suppost to be a fluke (curiosity factor). We are only seeing what will be the average audience numbers now.

NBC knows that they will not get 10+ million viewers nightly. That is not the plan.

I think the show is ok (better than any scripted show NBC could put there, considering their lineup), but he's being severely constricted by featuring only NBC stars as his TV guests. Really...how much tune in do they expect when they promote "the stars of Parks and Recreation"?
On the other networks, the other hosts invite them all. Jimmy Kimmel recently had Gordon Ramsay from Fox's Hells Kitchen on, and it was absolutely hilarious.

I don't really think that is the case. He has had Bill Maher from HBO, Julia Dreyfuss from CBS and Hugh Laurie from FOX that I can think of just in the last week.

The weak link in the show has been the bit right after the monologue. With the exception of Adam Carrolla it has been pretty weak.

he's not involved in a sex scandal and he's in Prime-time, i would say Jay is doing SWELL!!!

Really?
Since when?

Consensual sex between a supervisor and those working for him/her has always been a scandal.

In the 1990s, the National Organization for Women was on the verge of getting workplace romances involving a supervisor labeled as hostile environment sexual harassment toward other co-workers not involved in the relationship. Then, in January 1998, they had to quickly backpedal from that position. Had they continued their track and succeeded, David Letterman would now be a criminal.

not when you are their boss...read your company handbook pally.

You are confusing "sexual harassment" with "consensual sex." Again, there are no reports of sexual harassment in this case. None. And the production company that owns the show has no policy in their company handbook on dating/sexual relations among employees. Many companies don't...we all know many, many couples that met at work and got married.

But, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

While Leno did mention Letterman for about 45 seconds Friday night, that was it.

The Leno show seems relatively unchanged in three weeks. Which, in a way, is a measured, no-panic reponse. I like that.

We seem to too quickly jump to conclusions in this biz. Why not let it play out through the fall sweeps? Then, if things are not working, consider changes.

Way too early, IMO.

I have an opinion, for sure, but it really doesn't matter at this point. The outcome of this NBC experiment is months, if not years away. (If NBC is smart.)

The question that must be ask that when will NBC give up on Jay Leno. I'm watching less NBC programming this season. There are four shows I watch on the Network. I watch WTTE News insted of Jay Leno.

I still watch Jay, and like him better than Letterman, but if it wasn't for my 2 tuner DVR , I would pick CSI Miami, and CSI NY over Jay. I do like Letterman better than Conan, and Craig Ferguson over Both Jimmys.

how do you know it was "consensual"? how many women do you know who WANT to sleep with Dave letterman? probably not many, OR he wouldn't be using his position as BOSS to get them to have sex with him. just sayin'....

Can we take this Letterman crap over to the Letterman thread? Jay and Dave aren't competing any more, and Dave's problems are irrelevant in a discussion about Jay's prime-time mess.

I have yet to watch Leno's new show admittedly, but from what I've read on this board, I can see why WHDH in Boston wanted to avoid his show at 10 PM. How is WHDH doing at 11 now anyways?

Personally I find Leno to be a breath of fresh air compared to the same old dullness that has been seen on TV in the last few years in my opinion.

I know the ratings will proabaly never matchup as long as they are in the slot they are in.

Which is why I wonder if they don't try 7/8pm timeslot in case they need to spice things up a bit in my opinion.

Give this some time and let's see how it plays out. Hopefully, NBC will have the patience to follow through with this for the full year. Why do I say that? Well, because a lot of viewers are sampling the new offerings at 10/9 and blowing off Jay - as he's a known entity already. People's viewing patterns for the new season are not yet set. There's a percentage who will return to Jay on certain nights when there's nothing else on for them at 10. So, in and out viewership on the part of some. Not to mention that, once we get into reruns, specials, etc., I think you'll start to see Jay do a little better. At least half of the TV season is now comprised of reruns and filler material, which is when Jay will have the upper hand with new shows.

This is a bit like a radio talk show in that it takes more time than usual to catch on, but could also have fairly loyal viewership. It's a new concept for US television. How J does in the demos is also going play heavily into how NBC addresses this (if they even need to).
