So are Dan and Alfie out at KEGL? Finally?

93X in Minneapolis does well: the Active Rock station in Indy usually had higher ratings than Alt 103.3 (and with a deficient signal): 96 Rock in Cincinnati has bested the heritage rock station up there a couple of times. 100.5 in Atlanta is pretty much a train wreck.

I have little doubt (pure speculation) a well programmed rock format on 93.3 would do better than the current CHR format; however, in a cluster strategy, wouldn’t an Active Rocker and KTCK have enough audience overlap that could potentially hurt the big money maker?

Honestly, I felt the talk dropped the ratings. I know David discussed cume earlier. But, it’s just weird that a station with a large cume and low TSL is that low. It leads me to believe that the talk and not music is to blame. Jocks on music stations come and go all the time. I don’t think particular djs leaving caused the station to tank. They tried too much to compete with 103.7. As we’ve seen with kroq, the station could’ve been fixed. If the format really does change, it’s only because I heart media chose not to fix it. But, hey, im glad I’m not a pd there or anything. I don’t root for failure ever. But, I’ve got a hard time believing they’ll steal listeners away from other sports stations

It depends on the DJs. When Howard Stern left radio, all of the stations he was on took a major hit. When Russ died, it started the downward spiral. People know they can hear the music they want anywhere. But there was only one place to get Russ Martin. iHeart tried to retain Martin's audience, but his sidemen weren't a big enough draw. They realized it would cost money to replace Russ, and then 103.3 went away, and some people at The Ticket became available.

As for KROQ, Kevin & Bean were the ratings draw. The show got lazy, Bean retired, and the station was left with just a bunch of songs that people could hear anywhere. I think the big radio companies recognize the future of radio is not in music distribution. The challenge is hiring the right talent.

The problem is that they aren’t developing new talent. The small town stations where you could learn the trade are playing syndicated talk and voicetracked music. The big radio companies have backed themselves into a corner here. There is nobody in the pipeline after Russ Martin and Howard Stern. I guess they can go to robot DJs and hope that the listeners don’t hate it so much that they actually run out of listeners.

It depends. iHeart has a big talent development network. You just have to look around. I've been talking about Josh Innes. He's in the system right now and could end up in Dallas. There are lots of places for people to "learn the trade." The easiest way is to start your own podcast/stream. College radio has always been a big farm system. But there are still a lot of small stations with young talent who are waiting for an opportunity. The problem isn't always lack of talent. The problem is the audience takes time to warm up to new people. So when some veteran talent became available, iHeart jumped at the chance.

That would be great if they are doing that. They need to send some new blood here to Dallas. All I know is that when I drive through small towns, those stations seem to be playing lots of syndicated stuff.

I used to hear a lot of interesting stuff on late night radio. Now they just syndicate George Noory who is a lot more political and a lot less interesting than he used to be. Or the replay daytime programs. Yes, I know that is cheaper than using it as a playground for new talent, but still….

I used to look forward to tuning in to Russ Martin when I got off work. I would be laughing on the way home. I would stay up late to hear what Art Bell was up to and end up with weird nightmares.

When I was much younger and living in California I would be up late listening to Al Jazzbeau Collins in the Purple Grotto or Ray Taliaferro on KGO. When I lived in Denver it was Rick Barber, Tom Jensen and George Weber on KOA. I used to call those guys all the time and actually worked with Rick Barber’s wife for a while at a law firm.

I did overnights myself at 97Q in Manteca, California back in the 80s, right before I decided to go back to school and change careers into something that offered more money and stability. I also did college radio at KDVS.

I used to love radio. I used to work in radio. But as of today I can’t think of a single radio show I look forward to listening to anymore. Maybe radio is too homogenized now. Or maybe I’m just too old.

How many TV shows do you look forward to watching? Movies you look forward to seeing? New bands you look forward to hearing? Get the picture? The marketplace has been diluted by too much stuff. But that doesn't mean there aren't new people getting into radio. However, that's not what's going to happen with this station. Apparently Dallas still reveres a few of its older hosts, and so Mike Rhyner has a new job.

How many movies and TV shows do I look forward to? Actually, quite a few. I binge watched the whole season of Cobra Kai. I just streamed the new Top Gun movie. When new episodes of Andor and House of the Dragon drop I put the date on my calendar. The streaming world is filled with stuff I look forward to watching.

I don’t do cable and I haven’t turned on broadcast tv in years, and I grew up in a world with three networks and two independents on UHF with no Beta or VHS yet. Maybe the guy who took over HBO Plus will turn it into a wasteland of low budget reality shows in order to monitize and homogenize for the bean counters, but then I can just cancel my subscription and go somewhere else. There is a whole wide internet to stream and I still have my dvd player.

It’s just that right now broadcast radio gives me few reasons to flip over from satellite radio or my personal collection on my iPhone to listen. I used to flip over from satellite to hear Russ Martin. I still like Ed Wallace on 570 but what they do during the week is just meh. I actually like to listen to KXL if guys my age are allowed to. New bands come from You Tube and their own websites now.

I don’t really have a go to show that I go out of my way to listen to. That has gone away.

I think that's the point of this new line-up: To invest in hosts who do something different, rather than just play another ten in a row.

I am kind of interested in what Rhyner puts together. Maybe he can build on the male treehouse thing the frequency used to have. We will all find out on Monday.

So this is their moment. They say it's not gonna be sports, but every hire has been a sports personality. So it's gonna be one of those things where they SAY their man talk, but it's really just sports with some fart jokes mixed in.

I'm all for a real REAL man talk station. Hey, do it correctly and bill your ass off. But if it's just going to be another sports station, yawn.

I think if they are able to capture & reflect the personality of Mark Cuban, including his music and business, they might have something.

A hardcore sports station where a host argues statistics on games played 20 years ago with sports geeks who care about such things does not interest me much.
 
Based off people I’ve talked to who have connections to Iheart media in Dallas (and i could’ve been lied to as well lol), I’m still sticking with my original bet that no sports/guy talk format exists and this is a stunt to freak people out and buy tickets to freaker’s ball. So many things don’t add up. Why not start the format at 7am when you launch a new morning show for a new format? I think a lot of people inside ihm are laughing at us right now. But, this is a top 10 radio stunt in the history of radio. This is fun
