So Cal Radio Coverage of Today's Fires

With the multiple Fires scorching the Southland today, does local Radio have enough resources to cover these events, or do they just team up with their TV partners? Currently all the English TV Stations except 13 & KDOC are showing live breaking coverage. None of the Spanish TV Stations seem to care? We don't get Radio in this area past the Salton Sea. There are 6500 acres burning in Ventura County alone with a 0% containment rate. Fixed Wing Aircraft are grounded due to wind. PCH closed and more...

KFI and KNX have been covering the Springs fire and the fires in Banning and Camarillo...but I'm sure the coverage would be a lot more extensive if the fires were in Los Angeles County. Considering that KNX and KFI can be heard in San Bernardino County and Ventura County, that shouldn't be the case. To KFI's credit, though, their website has 40 (so far) photos of the fires:

The Los Angeles Times website has been updated several times today and has sometimes offered more recent news than what I was hearing on the radio. I miss the 1970s when the news stations had dozens of field reporters. How often do KFI afternoon hosts John Kobylt and Ken Champiou report the news that they're seeing on a television in the studio? Sheesh!

On the afternoon of May 3, a fire broke out in Chevy Chase Canyon in Glendale. John & Ken said they could see the flames from the KFI studio. For two hours, KFI's news story did not change. Who is responsible for updating details when there is a fire? Is there a Sigalert-type system whereby a fire department spokesman can give periodic updates to all the stations? Is there an AP reporter on scene? Do local stations send out reporters? I live in Glendale and it's frustrating when there's a fire and I can't find updated reports on the radio.

(Between 1984 and 1991, there were a lot of arson fires near Glendale College and other areas in California. They were set by John Orr, the fire captain and arson investigator for the Glendale Fire Department! He's now serving a life sentence in prison. I'm presuming he has no matches or lighters.)

I just hope the next fire doesn't happen while KFI is running a computer show, KNX is running a cooking show, KABC is running a real estate show, and KFWB is running a financial services infomercial! I won't find out anything!

Speaking of KFI...at 9:00 this morning, they said the Camarillo fire had burned 28,000 acres and was only 30% contained.

Just now on the 6 pm news, they said the Camarillo fire has burned 28,000 acres and is only 30% contained.

Thirteen hours later and the fire, despite being only 30% contained, is still the same size! Amazing!

Okay, I meant nine hours, not thirteen. My math skills are deteriorating.

On this morning's 8:30 news, Terri Anzur said the Camarillo fire has now burned "more than 28,000 acres." Not too specific. How much more? And she said the new Banning fire has burned 650 acres---the same figure that was given at 9 pm yesterday.

Now I'm wondering how many other news stories aren't being updated.

You seem to imply that it's the fault of the reporters that these fire numbers aren't updated enough. You would be a fool to suggest that. The reporters only know what the firefighters tell them obviously, and when the fire is constantly growing it is very difficult indeed for firefighters to come up with an estimate. You're being impatient and ridiculous with your demand for constant updates, it's not going to happen.

The size of the perimeter of the fire and the percent of containment within that perimeter are not related.
