So Cal Radio Signals

Where have you received Southern California radio signals, outside of Southern California?

For myself I was able to tune into KRTH and KIIS around Yuma, Arizona.

Fading in and out around Phoenix was KGGI.

Once upon a time I did a road trip down the Baja Peninsula from Tijuana to La Paz and Cabo and I was quite surprised how far south into the Baja Peninsula many L.A. stations reached. On the coast of Guerrero Negro, this being summer helped, many L.A. FM stations came in quite clear, to my surprise.

Up in the Big Sur area, much to my surprise and confusion, KOLA and KGGI were coming in clear for a moment.

Speaking of stations from that region, in Bishop and even parts of Mammoth the Inland Empire Heaps Peak stations, KGGI, 97.5 and even KCXX can be picked up.

Oddly, KTWV can be picked up someways north on the 5 around the Coalinga area.

Just north of Redding going up into the Mount Shasta area if your radio antenna is positioned correctly you can pick up, briefly, a few of the Mount Wilson stations.

Anybody have any stories of far out, unlikely places where our stations have been received?

Going Down I-5 into Redding I've picked up a few Modesto Stations, I'll have to try that the next time I go up there. Which FMs can you pick up up there?

It's the inverse, but quirky none the less...a few times lately, driving from Palm Springs back to LA late on a clear night, I can pick up KSL from Salt Lake City....also KCBS from SF.

I think thats pretty normal
What I've picked up:
-Camping at Pinnacles National Monument around 7:30am I picked up KFI, KNX, and KGIL
-In Tulare you can pick up KLOS
-KFI and KNX can be picked up during the day as far north as Tracy (After that its blocked out by 650 KSTE from Sacto)

I'd like to go up to Mt. Diablo here in the Bay Area and see if I can pick up an LA FM from there, any ideas on which ones to try for?

I have heard these in Northeast Ohio (outside Cleveland)
KFI, KLAC, KNX KPOL, KBIG, KRKD, KTYM, KGER KWIZ, KPOP (1020) KGBS (1020) LA Metro
KROP Brawley
KPRO Riverside
KERN KPMC Bakersfield
KHSJ Hemet
KCBQ KFMB (540) San Diego
KWOW Pomona

Back in 2008 when I use to travel to San Deiago 100.3 comes in fine in the downtown area. KHHT fades in and out. KRTH comes in just fine.

I've taken 101.5 KGB San Diego all the way to the top of the Grapevine. KIQQ/KQLZ 100.3 boomed in frequently into Bakersfield as well as KKHR/KCBS 93.1. 95.5 KLOS can be caught all the way to Bishop to the North and East to Mountain Pass along I-15.

KBIG is clear around SD, on a very clear night i can get KDAY in my area.

KTWV comes in reception on the 5 in Carlsbad

KVYB comes in and out

along the 101 past Santa Barbara...until just before where it veers north away from the coast towards Buellton...you have a total over-water path from San Diego. Most of the San Diego FM signals make it up that far quite nicely on a regular basis.

I could get a faint KFI 640, KFWB 980 and KNX 1070 in Las Vegas! At the day!

KBIG gives a faint signal down in SD, and KGB-FM comes in somewhat clear, when that weekend "pirate" station on 101.5 doesn't invade the frequency.

I think whatever signal you hear outside of So Cal...they should be playing more R&B. ;D Damn...i must be reading too many of BJordan's posts.

I have heard 101.5 KGB San Diego up at Bass Lake at night.KRTH I have heard in El Centro/ Yuma great. In the mid 80s Listened to Power 106 all the way in Rosarito Mexico.

I'm not surprised. I have experienced the opposite....when I drive up to the Wrightwood area to go snowboarding (just before you get up to the high desert from th Cajon Pass) I have picked up several Las Vegas stations on hwy 138.....The most notable was 97.1 and 104.7 FM from LV.

Back in 1986, when KGB-FM once had a local talk show on Sunday nights, the hosts sometimes got a card or letter from a listener in Denver. Huh? The KGB-FM signal reached that far into Colorado?

I've picked up KBBY 95.1 in Ventura down San Diego way. Keep in mind FM antenna's are line of sight. Look at a map of Southern California and it's not to unusual to pick up the Ventura/San Diego stations.

As for AM stations I can pick up Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Cedar City, Salt Lake City, Albequerque, Reno, Fresno, San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, Window Rock, Sacramento (Granted these are at night) I've not really spun the dial during the daytime.

I can often get KFI all the way to Sacramento in the daytime, depending upon atmospherics. KOLA-FM often gets into San Diego, and almost always into North County. Yes, I've heard KBBY in SD, and I've also heard KPRI in Laguna Niguel (not bad for a B1).

But the one that used to get me most of all was when I'd pick up KLRD-FM's Air 1 signal from Yucaipa in the basement of my place in Vista :) That's a big 550 watts at 3,500 HAAT :D
