So do you think it will happen 101.9 going all sports?

It really is a shame for such a great city as ny you peeps don't have a great left of center rock station and in the case with 101.9 the suits refuse to fill a hole in the market with 101.9 and just program the station as they wish but it is better then wxrk with there grandpa rock.

This station 101.9 had potential but emmis blew it just like movin in los angeles.

So now when i come to visit i will have even less of a choice for tuneage in the big city.

I bet they will blow it up and wxrk will still continue sucking just as before

aside from the fact that 101.9 gives new meaning to the phrase "format of the month" (the late Rick Sklar - God rest his soul! - first coined that term in his wonderful book "Rockin' America" - a MUST-read - back about 20 some-odd years ago....), it would be interesting to see full-time sports on that frequency...but will it happen? "stay tuned, you ain't seen nothin' yet"...

It is unfortunate but as this business continues to deteriorate I would not be at all surprised to see syndicated sports/talk
occupy 101.9. God forbid they just tweak the format a bit, to attempt to make it a little more successful...

I hope they tweak it. then k-rock might try to compete a bit more IMHO. if they change, I wonder who will be my #3 preset?

Do you mean they should abandon the format and put something else in its place? Or were you sarcastically suggesting that tweaking the format is exactly what they need to do in order to make it successful (what I happen to believe)?

currently:
1: 92.3
2: q 104.3
3. 101.9 Wrxp
4: z100
5. 106.1WBLI
6: 95.5 WPLJ somtimes 102.3 WBAB depends on the week and whats been playing on the 2

It is PAINFUL to watch this because they are SO close...just dump the pre-punk artists and turn up the tops spins...and as I am listening right now take OUT the freakin' BEASTIE BOYS...

Think WXRT in Chicago, for crying out loud. They play a little Zep, but:

A. They were there in the 70s and have the cred
B. They DON'T play Guns 'n Roses and all those hard artists

I don't get it...they SEE it doesn't work. I know...the research says XYZ. Well. That research IS NOT working. Go with MODERN ROCK ONLY. Think WHTG down the Jersey shore...they only go as far back as the punk era. They do their "Retro Rock Weekends" with 80s and 90s "oh wows" all day long. Then back to the 80% currents/recurrents, with rest gold tracks.

Will I ever live to see this before the station falls apart? WHY HAVEN'T THEY FIRED BE or WHOEVER THE CONSULTANT IS? Or before I hear the next PROMO for the Guns 'n Roses listening party? My God...do THEY even hear how bad it sounds?

The consultants are from Denver and they're all a mile high, alright. They just won't admit that the original formula was off, and they insist on rolling with the same mix as if suddenly people are going to start liking it. Maybe the new manager will see through their smoke and mirrors. It'll be much harder to get rid of the other poison in that stew - the corporate Emmis types who think they know rock programming because they have vague memories of WNEW.

WRXP is a textbook case of too many people being empowered as decision-makers, butting heads with one another, and in the end getting nothing accomplished. And as easy as it would seem to be to repair the situation, I betcha they won't.

Bingo! The same process is underway at Bonneville in L.A. Too many cooks, none of whom really get it.

BJ Steigner,

What are the other alternatives? Under WQCD-101.9 the worst ratings the station had was a share in the mid two's.

The last time the station @ 101.9 saw ratings below a one share was when the then WPIX-FM had the format of the month back in the late 70's.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

There's probably lots of other alternatives that Emmis would look into other than bringing CD 101.9 back.

You're quoting 12+ numbers, but you have to remember that those numbers are almost meaningless in the actual industry. CD 101.9's demos were on the very high end and aging out of what advertisers are looking for (whether rightly or wrongly).

Now, that doesn't mean that the format they replaced it with is the solution to their woes...especially as it has been executed. I do think a station that focuses on primarily new rock music with some classic alternative would certainly do better than RXP is doing now, but I don't see Emmis making those kinds of tweaks unfortunately.

Going CHR would seem to be a logical move, to go after Z100, which has had no direct competition in ages and is a very strong performer. However, to really pull it off, Emmis will have to spend to bring in personalities, and I doubt they're in a spending mode right now.

I still think it's more likely that Emmis sells or leases out the frequency, with ESPN being a strong possibility.
