So far No x-mas music in north florida area

So far no x-mas music here in the north florida area 107.1 Hit Music Now WGMY-FM Tallahassee still doing Top40 with Elivs Duran In the Morining Show. Over in Panama City I was surprise that Sunny 98.5 not doing x-mas music not just yet. I remeber Sunny 98.5 flip to x-mas music early a few years back.

Anyway just giving u an updates around the north florida Tallahassee,Panama City Area. While Albany's 97.3 and Jacksonville's 107.3 allready flip to x-mas music.

By the way no kidding here I notice 97.3 WEGX-FM getting alittle weaker in Tallahassee when I tune to hear x-mas music their singal isnt that storng as they used to before.

It is only November 6th.

I think a half-dozen or so stations have already flipped, perhaps foreshadowing format flips or tweaks. There was some Christmas music on Mobile's Lite Mix Saturday night but that may have been Delilah or something. I heard about three notes of "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" and almost knocked the button off the radio trying to change the station.

So far, no switches west of Panama City either.

we have 2 stations in JAX playing holiday music..personally i think its too early but im not doing to marketing for those stations. WJGH 107.3 and WEJZ 96.1 are the stations.

In my opinion this is too soon to start playing Christmas music; however, I understand why WEJZ is playing Christmas music now. Since WJGH made the "jump" ahead of WEJZ as a form of counter programming, Lite 96.1 countered back as a form of damage control in a effort to keep as many of the ratings as possible. Tradionally and historically when a station moves to all Christmas music, it does very well in the ratings. WJGH knew this, which is why it flipped ahead of WEJZ. Let the battle continue between WJGH and WEJZ.

Mark, I believe WEJZ had another option. If they only considered the question, do we flip to holiday music now or do we execute as planned, I’m thinking they became too reactionary, a follower and in effect they boxed themselves into a corner.

Listeners have a voice in radio today through social media. Let’s just say there are lots of pissed off listeners @ both stations who feel, probably rightfully so, that it is way too early to play Christmas music.

So, I thought of another scenario. Let’s face it; the horse was already out the barn. WEJZ could have just as easily channeled listener opinion and emotion to their advantage. They could have given listeners a few dates to choose an “appropriate” time to go all Christmas. It could have been an effective and dirt-cheap promotion where they truly could have said “We value our listeners’ opinions.”

In this way, they would have met a challenge and changing market condition head on by forging their own solution instead of appearing knee-jerk. IMO, what WEJZ put on the air Saturday sounded very hastily put together. I don't believe they helped themselves at all. WJGH has a far better imaging presentation and you can tell, this was in the planning stage for quite some time.

WEJZ will probably not earn the kind of holiday numbers they had last year because of increased competition on a full-signal station. Christmas format burn-out will become reality too. But, I believe they tarnished their brand a bit by irritating some of their long-time listeners. For the new guys, they really didn’t have anything to loose as there are still listener impressions to be made. Given how quickly WEJZ reacted tells me they acted more emotionally than strategically. What do you think?

96.1 did just jump into it..i honestly think that 107.3 will go more into a HOT AC direction after Christmas or just go completely after 96.1. 96.1 is the most recognized station that Renda has in town so why not go after the powerhouse if you got a chance to beat them.

Although I was surprised how quickly Lite 96.1 jumped on it, my impression is that WEJZ probably reacted correctly. They most likely felt that to wait until a few days before Thanksgiving (their normal trigger point) would give their core listeners too much time to "discover" another station in town, namely Magic 107-3, playing what has become an "EJZ Holiday Tradition over the last few years. Like Mark said, it's competitive damage control.

Nfladxer and Mark, I will defer to your expertise in the business of radio. Maybe it’s time to lighten things up a bit.

When I was a kid I looked forward to watching Star Trek on Friday nights. James T. Kirk had to make lots of decisions. He wasn’t logical like Spock and Kirk’s human side often caused conflicts. But later on in life when I was faced with a really tough decision, I often wondered what Kirk would do in that situation.

For the Trekies, “Kobayashi Maru” is something familiar. It’s when you turn a “no-win situation” into a win by really thinking outside that box and doing the unconventional. WEJZ was in many ways in a no-win situation. My idea above as to what WEJZ could have done was unconventional. But just imagine if they did.

All in all, I’ve had a pretty good track record doing the unexpected. Every once in a while, radio makes some bold and unexpected moves. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that way more interesting and it would be great to experience more of that.

This just in Tallahassee Florida Q 106.1 Oldies now playing x-mas music when I hread thursday morining 11/17/11 non-stop x-mas music

HUMM.. format change coming up? I'd like to see Gulf Breeze's Magic 106.1 do the same thing. They need to return to Rock 106. Those were the days!

Magic 106.1 = Money. Rock 106 died when TK-101 signed Lex & Terry away from 106.1 (why oh why drop a 6k station for a 100k station? Dumb decision for L&T, bet they regret it now!). Better luck with stablemate Journey 100.7 flipping. Things *may* change a little whenever WRNE gets that translator up and running... unless the FCC froze it or something. It's already taken too long compared to similar situations in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Atlanta.

I stepped away from my computer and came up with a new idea (at least for me). Hey Cumulus, try this one on for size. Swap the frequencies of 99 Rock and Country 105.5. Then launch Rock 100.7 in Pensacola... heavy on the classics with some a whole lot of AAA tunes thrown in! Don't copy CC's TK or The Rocket.

Better Country signal to compete with Highway 98. FWB/Destin keeps on rockin' and Pensacola gets what it deserves!

Gotta go to the hospital now. Fun fun fun all morning long!

My understand is that the new translator rules are in effect and this has stopped all the multi-hops cold. The FCC did relax the translator move rules a little, but multi-hops in short span are considered an abuse of the system if not a violation of the rules, so they aren't going anywhere anymore.

Louis,

I think you're right about Q106.1 staying oldies - it still has ratings. I believe this is the first
time that Opus Broadcasting has been the first in line to go all-Christmas, although they did go all-Christmas one year with the Wolf, but did not change formats afterward.

Oddly enough, close to ten stations have plummeted or simply don't show up at all in the latest Arbs. Where did all those listeners go since even the top stations don't have great numbers?

Wonder if they'll try to go ahead and light up from the currently licensed sites north-west of Pensacola (Barrineau Park, Muscogee Road, Gateswood areas)? Creative engineering could throw a decent signal over a good half of the population.... ESPN on 101.1 might not hit their downtown crowd target but WRNE on 106.9 should get a good chunk of what they want. 103.3 up in McDavid is SOL without a move south and 106.5 parked up in north Milton hasn't applied for anything yet (does anyone know if it's ever been on the air?). If the FCC shuts down translator moves all together 106.5 would pair up well with Milton's 1490 or 1330... just saying. With all the weird tropo around here, who knows what kind of signal 250 (or even 125) watts could get from a cell tower out in them there woods... just make sure the antenna is pointed the right way and pray.

Same old story for Pensacola. Too little... too late. We always miss the boat. Didn't know local politics would mirror radio moves.

I seriously doubt it. Remember the rule is the translator has to be within the 2 mV/m contour or 25 miles from the TX, whichever is closer. And with Pensacola's ground conductivity, I doubt the 2 mV/m contour of WRNE or WBSR or whoever extends much beyond I-10.

And still no Christmas music in this area, thankfully. (Bah humbug! :D)

That stupid "Christmas Format" is just one other reason not to listen to the Radio. I think a lot of it has to do with laying talent off during that time.
