So...Glenn Beck is moving off KGIL?

I was told today that Glenn Beck will no longer be on KGIL. He is supposed to be some place different on Monday.

Anyone know where he is going?

My guess is KABC.

I could be wrong but I can't imagine it would be KABC since they would have been promoting the hell out of it for the last month if that was true. The way KABC promotes Bill O'Reilly, Mark Levin and Sean Hannity you would think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Just not too long ago one their promotions went like "more and more people are tuning into Larry Elder...". I guess their programming department didn't get the memo.

Indeed.

Just a few weeks ago when gas was at a four-year low KABC was running a promo that basically talked about gas approaching the five-dollar mark.

With topical promos as that I mentioned above I cannot imagine how or why this station isn't as popular as it once was.

KABC would be the only logical choice. KABC has a new PD and O'Reilly is leaving radio. KFI would have to dump Handel and/or Rush though I suppose they could run a delay in place of Dr. Laura.

KGIL dumped on Glenn when they delayed and truncated his show to pick up Laura Ingraham. KRLA is the only other local news talk outlet and I can't see them getting Beck though they could do a live broadcast in place of the place holder they put on when Laura jumped ship from the Salem stations.

To quote Arte Johnson "verrry interesting!" ???

What kind of ratings does KRLA and KGIL get? It seems that Glenn Beck is bigger than these stations. KABC seems logical, but they really need to go more live and local.

KRLA is on a lower tier just barely a blip and KGIL just jumped into the very bottom in the last period. KGIL is the newest player in the News Tall genre for LA and has made, IMHO, some major bone headed moves if they really want to make an impact. One was after getting Glenn Beck they shifted him to a delay and two hour truncated version to accommodate Laura Ingraham. This after starting with Neal Boortz, then dropping him for Michael Savage, delayed from the previous day as the morning lead in.

In all of the shuffling they also have moved Dr. Drew when supposedly they were the “flagship” station for his syndicated daytime show. They also dropped their only local weekday show, Michael Jackson, so if they lose Beck look for the format wheel to spin again at AM 1260/540.

KABC is the most logical local home for Beck as it would better his placement onto a station that gets actual ratings. It would also give them a good replacement for O’Reilly. If they want to do cost cutting they could put him on live during the McIntyre slot but that wouldn’t give them a local morning show that they need to go against Handel. I am not sure how Premier would like Beck directly up against Rush though.

I can not see KFI making the changes they would need to put Beck on, unless they want to drop their local evening show in favor of a delayed time slot for Glenn Beck. Handel is a friend of Beck, he and Rush are anything but friendly, so he might be happier with Beck following him but I think that KFI is locked into Limbaugh so long as he stays on. He was the impetus that started their supremacy in the News Talk format locally which was previously the domain of KABC.

nmoore6676, Thanks for that ratings link. It's very interesting

It does clearly show why KABC is finally making changes. After years of neglect and arrogance from their programming department they finally have realized that it's time to swim or sink. It seemed that they were practically the only station that I looked at that dropped listeners over the last three month period, so no wonder changes were being made (David G, Larry Elder). I think more changes are necessary if KABC wants to survive.

This very site shows the PPM cume/shares for LA stations, of which all the talk stations including KGIL are listed. Some better than others.

Anyone who thinks the top talk station in America is dumping any of their shows, let alone a morning show with nearly 1 million listeners, the #1 talk show of recent memory, the flagship advice talk show that is consistently top ranked in non-traditional demos, or anything else, is mistaken.

I will miss Ed Schultz as I thought it was a bad idea when KTLK cut his show. I feel that having Schultz on during an Obama presidency would be interesting and provide useful insights. The move to put Beck from nine to noon is good, better would have been putting him back live at 6 and delaying Ingraham or better still leaving on Big Ed. Lou Dobbs is a bore so no loss there and Dr. Drew had been sent to the minors (at night) anyway. I do not understand the Savage move, he is way to vitriolic for my tastes. Maybe a countermove against J&K?

Since my habits allow listening between 3 and 5 (travel time) I won't be listening to AM1260 anymore in the afternoon which is a struggle in some areas anyway. I am still sampling KABC during that period anyway since they finally got rid of Larry Elder. I suspect there will be changes though at 790 so I am avoiding forming an attachment. It will be interesting to see what develops there since they didn’t pick up Beck. I suspect that DGH will have something in store though or I hope so.

I really wanted KGIL to do well as they are locally owned, though no more local programs, but they have disappointed me yet again. :(
