So How Much Will the Big Signal Help Q?

It will be interesting to see how the move plays out. Personally, I'm glad to have CHR back on 99.7. I used to love the old "Power 99" back in the day, and I always hoped CHR would return to the signal someday.
As far as 100.5 goes; I'd prefer an AC format over rock.

(oh, and speaking of 99.7's signal; does anyone remember the old top of the hour sweeper Power 99 used to use? It was "From the top of the IBM Tower, Pumping wattage into Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina....And an itty bitty piece of the Bahamas! WAPW Atlanta...Power 99 !" It was voiced by Mark Driscoll. Awesome sweeper proclaiming 99.7's huge signal.)

Inintended benefit: This also helps them dig into the few folks listening to the Beat, as their stick off 316 still does not cover all of Atlanta well.

The Beat hasn't been off 316 for about 7 years. They used that tower to launch and then moved to the 97.1 tower in Buford. When Eagle left the 97.1 tower, The Beat moved to The Eagle's (better) antenna position on it.

Tell that to GST in the early 90's, Q100 five years ago, and WPZE. Accorfing to that reasoning, they would have never had a chance, so why try?

A chunk of WPZE's core audience lives in or close to the city of Atlanta, so having a huge signal wouldn't make a significant difference as it would if it were a rock or country station. That's not to say that they wouldn't a better signal, but they aren't doing too bad without it.

Yes, they restrict their audio to 5khz and it does make the audio sound like hammered dung. To my ears, unlistenable. I understand the idea behind it, but it's not working. I can tell no difference at all in their signal strength since they started doing this. All they've accomplished is they've made a mediocre signal sound like excrement. Believe it or not, this was mandated by Clear Channel corporate engineering. I guess all levels and all departments in that company are f'ed up. Check out 1510 WLAC, 700 WLW, 840 WHAS etc. They all sound like crap now. WHAS used to be a great sounding station in every respect. No more. Thanks, Clear Channel.

Likewise with Star. I was in the car too! The station was still almost listenable around Chattanooga

Actually, broadcasting in mono will help them, at least on radios that don't automatically 'blend to mono' on weak signals. Most car radios do blend, but most walkmans and boom boxes I've seen don't. Anniston is outside the fringe coverage of WJOX according to the Radio-Locator maps. Of course, it shows Starkville, MS being on the very edge of the fringe and yet the signal's pretty viable on the MSU campus.

It is my understanding that CC decreed the 5 kHz chop as preperation for (ugh) IBOC HD. WERC in Birmingham was like that well before the digital junk was installed. WLW, WLAC and WHAS are all HD now, is WGST still analog only? (Not that HD is worth a damn on AM, but that is neither here nor there.)

I'm kinda surprised 100.5 doesn't get into the buildings in downtown and midtown better. The stick's right in the vicinity, right?
