So, how will 100.7 and 93.3 react now that we are in PLAY?

Will 100.7 be forced to switch format?
Is MJ up for a fight? He has never been in a Hits war in this market. I believe he was hired by 93.3 after Q105 was already beaten to death.

It would sure be nice if they did. WMTX could finally hang it up after 11 years on 100.7 It could relaunch as WSHE - SHE 100.7 and program it as a proper classic rocker. But wait, CC was the one who ran Thunder into the ground too... I forgot. :-[

I had just suggested to a friend that 94.1 and 98.7 completely blow both 93.3 and 100.7 out of their formats, and 93.3 comes back to life as "The Prozac Pig" and blows 104.7 out of the format, yet again. Stranger things have happened.

Hearts and well wishes to those who lost their jobs and livelihoods today. We've all been there... ::hugs::

The new Play 98.7 isn't a CHR/Pop station and as such is NOT a direct competitor of 93.3 FLZ, whose biggest competitor has always been Rhythmic CHR Wild 94.1 (and preciously Wild 98.7).

FLZ's never had a problem dealing with Hot A/Cs whether it was Modern A/C Star 95.7, Adult CHR/Hot AC Mix 96, or Hot A/C US 100. In fact, FLZ's ratings peak at around a 10 share were back when it had two Hot A/Cs to "compete" with.

98.7's signal will be an issue in some parts of the metro area (especially around some parts of Tampa and Brandon). The Rhythmic CHR audience put up with 98.7 b/c it was the only place on the FM dial for years to provide a Rhythmic and Hip Hop format (until 95.7 The Beat came on the scene). The Hot A/C audience, on the other hand, already has a strong 100,000 watts option to go with, and much of the Hot A/C audience is now also in tune with CHR/Pop radio. That's why you're seeing Hot A/C stations all over the country dropping Modern A/C titles and adding more Rhythmic product from Lady Gaga, B.O.B., Taio Cruz, and others. Look at Mix 101.9 Chicago, Q-104 Cleveland, Mix 106.5 Baltimore, etc.

98.7 should have gone with a different format such as FM Talk, 90s hits, or another Spanish-based format.

They might as well turn 100.7 FM into a full-time simulcast of 970 WFLA.

And immediately lost 30% of their audience when WILD went on the air, which they have never gotten back - the same thing that CBS is hoping for here on the same frequency. I wish them luck, but after listening for 20 minutes, I did not even set a preset for them on my radio.

They will just add more music into his show if the new station is a problem - just as they have been doing over the last several months, which has increased his ratings accordingly (and no one on radio-info.com has noticed).

I think the best CBS can hope for in this situation is to skim a few more listeners (mostly older) from WFLZ, putting WILD in a stronger position.

Mix will probably soldier on as-is, perhaps playing the "variety" angle. Play 98.7 will be fairly limited (by design) as far as playlist is concerned:

No "gold" (to protect Q105)
No Hip-hop/light on the rhythmic (to protect WILD).

IMHO Mix is not CBS's main target in this case (though they stand to take a hit).

I don't expect much will change at 'FLZ either (though the occasional on-air dig would be fun..."We PLAY what they don't." perhaps?). BTW...wasn't that part of how 93.3 won the CHR battle years ago (i.e. tearing down Q105 for avoiding certain hits, and "sanitizing" others)?

.....and The Eagle will react by playing the live version of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed".

And the Dove will react by playing all the deep cuts by Wilson Pickett.

Why should anyone expect Play to demolish Mix?

Here is the response ... Because everyone will be sampling the station to see what is new. If they find it's "similar" to MIX, then they won't want to switch. What for? They are already not missing it because the "new" station is very similar and with the blend of FLZ is a WIN/WIN for new listeners in Tampa Bay.

MIX and FLZ have better signals and personality. I expect Play to be gone in a year or less.
