So, I bought an HD radio...

I picked up a Sangean HDR-1. I found a display model at Sharper Image...no box, manual or accessories - just the radio sitting on a shelf. The manager at Sharper Image obviously wanted the thing out of his store...so, he gave it to me "as is" for $65. I figured...why not? :)

When I plugged it in at home (Newport, Jersey City - right on the Hudson, directly across from lower Manhattan) I could not pick up a single AM station. Darn.

So, I looked for an AM antenna. On the HDR-1, it looks like the AM antenna is supposed to screw into the back of the radio. I couldn't find an AM antenna that screwed in...but, I did pick up a Terk "Advantage" AM antenna. It has two loose wires at the end...right now, I have those two loose wires rather precariously poked into the screw hole in the back of the radio.

Voila! I now get every AM station in NYC...and, my station (WCBS-AM) sounds great in HD. I don't spend a lot of time listening to the FM HD channels...but, I've found some that I enjoy, and I've programmed those into the pre-selects.

So, for the $65 and another $30 for the antenna, I'd say I'm happy...although, if any one even sneezes near the radio, it could easily dislodge those precariously placed antenna wires! ;D

Any suggestions on how to better attach the antenna wires?

Thanks!

Buy a cable at radio shack with a mono (two conductor) 1/8" plug on one end, and bare wires, alligator-clips, or any other connector on the other end. Snip the end that doesn't have the 1/8" plug, trim the wires, and connect them to the radio's AM antenna terminals. Plug the 1/8" plug into your AM Advantage.

Happy listening! If you ever want to sell your radio....
