So I'm a first time DXER

Using just a radioshack portable radio..(west of Dallas about an hour) and I log 1500 ESPN Radio out of the Twin Cities. I also usually log WBBM, WGN and WSCR from my hometown of Chicago. Any others I should look for?

Matt

Since you're from Chicago have you tried for WLS?
Some others that you should easily get are KOA Denver (850), KMOX St Louis 1120, WWL New Orleans 870. These are just a few that should be very easy for you at your location.

Welcome to the hobby Matt. You're in a good location with many miles of stations in all directions. Folks in New England and the West Coast have a much tougher time of hearing most of the 50 states. The big 50KW stations such as 650 WSM Nashville, 700 WLW Cincinnati, 750 WSB Atlanta, 760 WJR Detroit, 830 WCCO Minneapolis should be available at your location. Those are the easy ones...New York City has big signals on 660, 770 and 880 but as far west as you are, there'll probably be other signals on those frequencies that may present challenges. Seems there's an Arizona signal on 660 and I know that NM has KKOB on 770, but these signals are aimed west to protect the NYC stations. The farthest east 'big signal', is WBZ 1030 Boston,MA. I have no idea what might be on 1030 where you are. You would have had a blast doing this 40 years ago...all of the big signals had their own 'private' frequency at night. They say that WLS was a regular in southern California back then. And I know from experience that KSL 1160 Salt Lake City was into Cincinnati most every night. Back then there were fewer stations on clearer channels. Today there are more stations to hear, but more interference to work around. Both eras had their advantages. It's still a fun hobby...Enjoy!

I had forgotten WLS..I have logged that one once. WWL is a pretty regular catch here in the area (550 miles roughly). KOA (850) may be impossible due to local WBAP (820) and the splatter. KMOX is a regular as well. I've also heard WGN, WBBM, and WSCR. I however don't miss the snow, as we saw a fair amount of ice and snow here this year. :)

KTNN (660) comes in well here in NM at night. You might try for the west coast stations - KFI (640), KNX (1070 - I have heard thme in NM) in LA. KGO (810), KCBS (740) in SF. KOMO (1000) in Seattle.

890 is interesting beacuse you are much more likely to get St. George Utah rather than Chicago.

Try also KDWN (720) in Las Vegas.

I am not up on the call letters but I seem to remember 940 in Fresno and 1530 in Sacramento.

Keep tuning and enjoy!

Thanks Bob :)

WSM Is semi regular here as well, although I havent tried for it yet. Can't get WLW (Even though I've been to Cincinnati a number of times) (local asian station on 700 is why). WSB and WJR I have gotten. 830 WCCO is going to be impossible because of WBAP 820 down the road in Arlington.

K6, 720 out of Las Vegas may be a stretch as well, because we have a local "soul 73" out of an area near Dallas as well. Their directional pattern is very strange as I am west of Dallas and directly north of Ft Worth, but far enough away from the city to get good reception.

830 shouldn't be a problem.
I get WCCO very often up here in McKinney.

Stations you should get

530 Cuba
580 Kansas
600 KTBB
640 KFI
650 WSM
720 WGN
750 WSB
800 XEROK
830 WCCO
840 (I forget what goes here)
850 KOA
890 WLS (This one will be difficult)
1040 WHO
1110 KFAB
1130 KWKH
1170 KFAQ
1200 WOAI
1220 Country station, can't remember calls
1290 KIVY
1500 Minneapolis, MN (Sports)
1570 XERF
1640 Oklahoma
1650 Arkansas
1660 Waco, TX
1680 Louisiana

And don't forget the semi-legendary oldies station, KVNS 1700 Brownsville! ;D

The only AZ 660 I know of is KTNN which broadcasts from the Navajo Reservation in NE AZ. They broadcast programs in both English and Navajo (changes by the hour I think).

I'm not sure if it could be heard from the OP's location as the 'net shows a DFW station also operating on 660 (KSKY). Nighttime coverage for KTNN is to the west with the map showing the furthest east signal reaching El Paso.

Matt, another possible daytimer where you are is KKOB 770.

I don't know how strong KAAM from the Dallas area is on that frequency where you are but maybe you could listen for KKOB in the background as they are not directional in the day.

But I'm almost certain you could get KOA daytime where you are on a good enough radio.

Good thought, although daytimer KJON Carrollton (a suburb of Dallas) has a decent signal to the west. Around sunrise and sunset, however, KOA will definitely be there.

On 770, KOB is possible after KAAM switches to their night pattern and before Albuquerque sunset; KAAM's Fort Worth coverage at night is really marginal. Surprisingly, KSKY has fairly decent coverage of a lot the D/FW area at night, making reception of KTNN even more challenging.

>>Also, you can try for KNBR 680 from San Francisco and KNX from Los Angeles.

KNX should be easier.>>

KNX could be a problem if KRLD is running IBOC.

KSKY still has a fairly good signal from my house in Keller (north of FTW, west of Dallas) I can try here in a bit to see what I can get. I think I've heard KFAB as well.

That would be WHAS Louisville,KY about 80 miles south of me. It's strong here day and night.
