So...is there any hope...

...for KBME? Clear Channel has been trying to compete with KILT for over a year without much success. Should something else be tried on 790, or should CC stick with the format another year? I don't think KILT is losing any sleep over their competition up the dial.

There is hope. They just just need a morning show which probably should have been in place before their local afternoon show. It's all about water cooler talk in the a.m.

They should try to bring in some fresh ideas instead of the typical sports guys around town (which CC has several of between KBME and KTRH). A knowledegable person (guy or even gal) who has awareness in town, pep, humor and knows sports.

Oh, and they should market the station more. But that means $$$.

Nah. They should pull the plug. Flop city.
:)

In all seriousness...what is the deal with their signal. It is soooo weak. It's like when I flip from 610, 740, 950, or 700 to 790 the volume has been turned down. Any one else notcie that? It makes them unlistenable, at least in my cars.

There have been a bunch of rumblings about that recently. I think CC is very aware that a morning show is needed before they can have any chance of catching 610. 790 just needs to get moving on that change...taken too long already.

By all means, get that show going. Perhaps they can grab that huge audience away from 610. Let's face it friends, Houston is not a sportstalk town. There are a lot folks just like me who could give a doodlydamn about sports.

The year is 1991. It's shift change at FM100-KILT. Ron Samuels' shift ends at 2AM. My shift begins. Ron and I are doing our usual exchanges in conversation. An excited Young Tom Fontaine rushes into the studio. This is the beginning of Tom's radio career. He is a stringer for the Rockets. He espouses what a great game it was that night. Ron and I look at each other and then look at Tom.

ME: Tom! Let me explain something.....
RON: We don't care about basketball.....
ME: Football....
RON: Baseball......
ME: Hockey.....
RON: Golf.....
ME: None of the above.
RON: The only sport we care about is Bedroom Polo. Unless you wanna talk about sex, forget it.

Tom was astounded. He couldn't believe a black guy, Ron, would not care about sports (certainly disputed that myth.) Ron is alive and well doing mornings at Kicks 108 in Victoria these days.

Tom and I shared a townhome several years ago. I was sitting in my chair watching the news on cable. Tom comes in and says, "Uhhh. Chuck, could I watch Sportscenter for just a little." I said, "Oh my God. Has something extraordinary happened in the world of sports? Did someone drop a football?"

The point of all this fun, is that some of us just don't care about sports.
