By all means, get that show going. Perhaps they can grab that huge audience away from 610. Let's face it friends, Houston is not a sportstalk town. There are a lot folks just like me who could give a doodlydamn about sports.
The year is 1991. It's shift change at FM100-KILT. Ron Samuels' shift ends at 2AM. My shift begins. Ron and I are doing our usual exchanges in conversation. An excited Young Tom Fontaine rushes into the studio. This is the beginning of Tom's radio career. He is a stringer for the Rockets. He espouses what a great game it was that night. Ron and I look at each other and then look at Tom.
ME: Tom! Let me explain something.....
RON: We don't care about basketball.....
ME: Football....
RON: Baseball......
ME: Hockey.....
RON: Golf.....
ME: None of the above.
RON: The only sport we care about is Bedroom Polo. Unless you wanna talk about sex, forget it.
Tom was astounded. He couldn't believe a black guy, Ron, would not care about sports (certainly disputed that myth.) Ron is alive and well doing mornings at Kicks 108 in Victoria these days.
Tom and I shared a townhome several years ago. I was sitting in my chair watching the news on cable. Tom comes in and says, "Uhhh. Chuck, could I watch Sportscenter for just a little." I said, "Oh my God. Has something extraordinary happened in the world of sports? Did someone drop a football?"
The point of all this fun, is that some of us just don't care about sports.
