Yes...it's dark at 5:00 now...but thanks to the miracle of the nighttime atmosphere, I can listen to 1520 WKBW on my way home from work!

The station breaks up a little bit but for the most part it is loud and clear in Montgomery County.

For those of you who are still depressed over the demise of WPEN, this clear channel 50,000 watter out of Buffalo, New York puts WPEN to shame!

1520 AM out of Buffalo, NY is a TRUE oldies station with TRUE oldies personalities. They use authentic old style jingles with bombastic, fast talking, interesting, knowledgable, and entertaining disc jockeys. The guy who does afternoon drive is EXTREMELY talented and the music is superb. They play surf and instrumental rock, doo wop, R&B, and the standards as well.

If you have never listened, do yourself a favor and experience TRUE Rock N' Roll oldies radio.

I'm going to start taping it at night before whoever owns it realizes how good it is and changes the format for the almighty dollar. This can't last, it's too good to be true.

I can get them sometimes in Montgomery County by about 4pm, and also now on the way to work at 7am, too. Sounds like you may not know this station's history - WKBW was the big top 40 station in Buffalo back in the '50's to '70's so the jingles, and the jocks, are originals from the era. The call letters long ago changed to WWKB but they still use the old WKBW original jingles. The afternoon jock Jackson Armstrong was on in the evenings in the early '70's - I used to listen to him in my college dorm in the Poconos (along with John Landecker on WLS who had just moved there from Wibbage). It's better than WPEN could be because this is their heritage - Jackson Armsrong today sounds just like he did 30 some years ago, even though he voicetracks the show. KB comes in clearly most nights around here. Sometimes in the dead of winter I can get them on the car radio almost all day, drowning out WCHE in West Chester.

The station returned to this format after a number of years as classic country and business talk.

Unfortunately KB's ratings aren't too good in Buffalo, so I don't know how long this will last.

For anyone in the area near West Chester - can WWKB be heard overtop of WCHE in the afternoons before signoff?

Yesterday I heard 1520 WWKB loud and clear on my car radio in central NJ an hour before sunset. Same thing with 900 CHML from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I also heard 1680 WDSS (Radio Disney) from Michigan and 1690 WWAA (Air America) from Atlanta, although much more faintly.

Oh yes, I also listen to WKBW when I am able. They do know how to do it don't they. I used to listen to them growing up along with WABC, WLS, CKLW, and of course WIBG and WFIL. When I was attending college in Boston I could not get WKBW since WMEX was at 1510, So I listened to WMEX, WRKO, and WPOP out of Hartford. Oh do we need a station around here to enjoy again.

That's a shame that WKBW's rating aren't great in Buffalo. I discovered them only 1 day after WPEN died and listen at least 3 nights a week. They certainly know how to do oldies, and I hope the ownership doesn't change the format!

Maybe it's just me, but I think Jackson Armstorng has an annoying voice. Anyway aside from him I enjoy KB here in Suburban Hartford, CT. We don't have an in-market oldies station on FM or AM anymore. There's WATR 1320 AM out of Waterbury, which runs the Jones Oldies Network, but their night signal goes in the opposite direction of where I live. Some of you may remember Hartford's oldies station Big D-103 (WDRC-FM), but they're officially a Classic Hits station now called Big Hits 102-9. Personally I'd rather take the "s" at the end of the word hits and put it before the h. That's what I think the station sounds like now.

You see even though I'm 23 1/2 and mostly listen to Hip-Hop, when I was younger I grew up listening to BIG D-103 (because that was the station my parents listened to) and still enjoy oldies today. That's why I don't like how WDRC sounds now.

>>That's a shame that WKBW's rating aren't great in Buffalo.<<

KB probably has more listeners located *outside* of Western New York than they do *inside* their primary coverage area! :)

I'm reminded of the time Dan Ingram on WABC said "I am sad to report that the latest ratings are out and we are only No. 13 - In Pittsburgh Penna.!"

Even in KB's heyday they had much of their listenership along the east coast outside of Buffalo. But that was recognized by ad agencies which would dump significant national ad money into stations such as KB, WABC, WBZ and WLS.

Sadly, that does not happen these days.

No need to, almost all of the 50,000 watt clear channel (small c's) stations all run the same dull syndicated talk or sports shows that are heard on local stations elsewhere, plus AM's are on full time, low power running the same shows where they used to be dayimers, so why bother to listen to AM stations elsewhere anymore?

It was so much fun in the old days, Jackson Armstrong on KB, John Landecker on WLS, Charlie Douglas on WWL, Lee Moore on WWVA, 'Hello Henry' on WBT, on & on...

Can anyone out there tape some WWKB for someone in Memphis?

If someone does, send me a tape. We have not done a trade in a while and that would be nice.
