So Long To A Boston Music Legend

Mr. Butch is gone.

Killed in a scooter accident today in Allston.

Note to the mods: This man IS relevant to Boston radio discussions as he was always a fixture at station events. He was a little bit of character that made Boston special.

I find it hard to believe he was only 56.

I remember seeing him at the WBCN Rock n' Roll Expo, and at most shows I saw at Narcissus, and The Rat. Wasn't he a judge at some FNX, or BCN event in the clubs? Kept his guitar inside Strawberries and mooched pizza from Pizza Pad or Nemo's.

In any event...I always gave him money. And he always repaid it when we met again. Last time I saw him was outside that hot dog place in Allston. He was well-dressed and appeared to be as clean as Mr. Butch could be.
And now, one of the last remnants of the Boston music scene is gone.

Harold Madison Jr. huh? Who knew??

I like Butch better...Keep the buck Butch. I know you're good for it.

Did he M.C. early Don Law concerts when Michael Fremer wasn't on the stage?

What a fixture when going to the Rat! He certainly was part of the scenery.

I didn't realize who he was til I saw his photo in the Globe. I've seen this guy around the Storrow Drive/Cambridge Street intersection many times.

Many people talk about living the barebones life, raising a middle finger to the Establishment. Butch apparently lived it.

Gotta respect that.

Mr. Butch was one of a kind... I saw him play with his band the Holy Men, when they opened for Flipper at the Channel ca. '84.. he was homeless but cared for, the past few years, by Ross and Sue from Regeneration Tattoo (formerly Records) on Harvard Ave, two top-notch people.

and I have a way to keep this to the radio topic... Butch had a show on Allston-Brighton Free Radio. I never caught it, since I live in the 'burbs but it was apparently quite entertaining.

Not true. One of us tried to let him record a show, with the hopes that the explitives could later be deleted. That, um, didn't quite work out ::)

I stand corrected... would have made a hell of a podcast though.

I've seen Mr. Butch quite a few times myself when I was working for Stanhope Garage at Kenmore Square before (and sometimes during) Red Sox games from 1982 to 1985 as a parking lot attendant - always good to me, and vice versa. ;)
