So maybe I'm a little obsessed with Christmas music

November 1 and B101.1 still hasn't bothered putting Christmas music on the HD2 or web stream. Maybe the new owners don't even know it has an HD2. LOL

Some cracks began to show at WBEB when it became public that Jerry Lee was no longer captain there (I used to work there at one time, so I casually follow their fortunes).

Will any attempts by the new, softer A/C in town to crash 101's Christmas party have merely the same effect as those tries in years past by the other stations' to do so? Will such futility run into 101's traditional 14's and 17's?

Armchair prognosticating, but my zero-dollar hunch is the Breeze stays out of the jingle bell fray. That said, with 98 out of the mix, it could leave an opening to exploit.

It's probably not an easy choice for them. If they're doing gangbusters with their target, it could make sense to stay in their regular format. If they're not--or if they were but now things have softened--it may behoove them to give Christmas a shot. Why leave all of it to their competitor?

Plenty of strategic things to consider. For instance: Do they see long-term legs for this format here? Or is it simply a cheap-to-run placeholder (like Sunny was toward the end)? If it's the former, why take a risk by tinkering with it? If it's the latter, and the station exists just to add a little cushion to the cluster's revenue, they can feel a little freer to play around with it.

I also suspect they realize that they're not going to pick up a bunch of displaced AC listeners when B101.1 goes all-Christmas. Chicago, Journey, Harry Chapin, Celine Dion, Louis Armstrong, Heart, Michael Bolton, and the ten-millionth spin of "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You" are not gonna draw B's audience. Seems a lot more likely that the Christmas music on 101.1 is going to take listeners from 106.1 instead of the other way around. So that's something to consider as well.

It was very odd timing. Things began slipping immediately after the deal was announced but literally nothing on air seemed to have changed. Listeners didn't know or care about what was happening behind the scenes so that whole thing is something of a mystery!

As can often be the case, issues may be visible to those looking beneath the surface before becoming apparent to the naked eye.

So, yeah, I’m not placing a whole lot of weight on the sale. Rather, I’d wonder if there was data that pointed to some potential turbulence ahead.

Or it’s just the way the stars aligned. Or misaligned as the case may be.

As of Nov. 1st, SiriusXM has 3 Christmas channels on the satellite and 15 streaming on the web and app. I think with Halloween being on a Thursday this year, everyone seems to think All Saints Day this year is Black Friday.

Check out the Detroit board. The Breeze there is flipping to ho-ho-ho and will challenge the market's traditional Christmas kingpin.

Sunny 104.5 went all Christmas even after B101 did in 2003 and onwards. Both stations enjoyed an increase in their ratings. They both flipped within hours of each other.
Last year Real 106.1 went all Christmas on a Friday and B101 flipped on Monday morning. Then 106.1 The Breeze launched and did not play a single Christmas song, not even on Christmas.
