So now there's a Joe and an Earl...

In Edmonton.
www.96x.ca DID NOT take me to "The number one hit music station"
Instead, it's now EARL! Bye bye hit music, hello country.
Chum's Bounce must be happy.

Listening to www.thebounce.ca/ I just heard "Owner of a lonely heart" so I guess, instead of targeting Urban, they're continuing where Mix...er 96X left off?

And what the heck does EARL stand for? Electronic Automatic Robotic Lighthouse?

A running tally of radio station "names":

BOB
JACK
EARL
FRED
DAVE
JOE
OZ

None of them start with "C" or "V" yet. CINDY-FM is one of the only possible ones in Canada's allocation system.

I know I've missed a few others.

name that means "You don't know Jack about what we'll play next...and we don't want you to tell us"

> EARL <--- Edmonton Alberta's Real Love (Country music) because the demand for MORE Country is very high right now.
>
FRED <--- I recall at one time or another it was in a market where Rock was just a mess, so it stood for "Feel Rock Ever Died?...well it lives here!"

> DAVE <---Delivering A Variety (of) Everything

> JOE <--- Joe started on AM in Edmonton, and was given the name because it was then known as radio for the average Joe that loves mono, then it moved to FM, and they kept the name anyway.

Cindy's call letters would still have to be CIND with the y absent, if this is about call letters...let's not go there...unless you're looking for a religious station with a preist constantly reminding us we're all sinners! LOL!

One might have assumed a format change was in the works when 96X got rid of the "#1 Hit Music Station" positioner and started calling themselves "90's & Now" 3 months ago but never bothered changing their website to reflect that. Their move back to a 25-34 Hot AC 3 months ago wasn't reflected on the website either.

They've always played dance and pure pop tracks. They never claimed they were Urban, but PD James Stuart has been quoted as saying Rhythmic CHR to describe the station. I wouldn't be surprised if they do move further to Mainstream CHR though.

And apparently they have. Green Day and Nickelback now on the playlist, and new imaging: "Edmonton's Only Hit Music Station."

How does the CBC get away with callsigns like CBKST or CBWAT? Or are they internally known as CBKS-TV and CBWA-TV?<P ID="signature">______________

Is Milestone still part-owner?

Good question! I don't want to assume, but if the website can be trusted, then according to the owner info, the answer is yes. credits to both Chum and Milestone radio are still present.

Tv is different, but yes, I believe the T at the end is just there to show that it is TV not radio.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Callsigns

While many CBC-owned TV stations have call letters of their sister radio stations with the letter "T" added (i.e. CBM/CBMT), I think there was only one such case ever in the United States of such a set of call letters: the old KNXT in Los Angeles, which was under the same ownership as KNX radio (KNXT is now KCBS-TV, and is still under common ownership with KNX radio).

WLW and WLWT in Cincinnati is another one, and both stations still have those calls. They aren't co-owned, however (CC owns the radio station and Hearst-Argyle the TV station).

As for cutesy Canadian callsigns for "name" stations? I'm surprised that there hasn't been a Chad or Chuck FM yet. . .

Someone out of Quebec won't let "CHADRADIO" go, even though it would appear they are not that anymore.

www.Chadradio.com/ is the link.
and www.CHUC1450.com/ is alive and well, but they don't call it "Chuck" they actually say "C H U C"<P ID="signature">______________

Apparently CHAD (and CHET, another good one) are in northern BC, not Quebec. They do seem to have merged into "Peace FM", though.

CHUC AM

I heard that CHUC is planning to move from 1450 AM to 1580 AM and
I think it would be a great ideal if the can call their station
"1580 Chuck AM"!

It's been awhile since i've posted here but incase I don't get
posting here again, do have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
to all!

Take care,

From Lee.

CBC "callsigns"

> How does the CBC get away with callsigns like CBKST or
> CBWAT? Or are they internally known as CBKS-TV and CBWA-TV?

The CB- block of callsigns is actually internationally allocated to Chile, not Canada. There's a longstanding agreement with Chile that allows the CBC to use the "CB-" callsigns domestically. Think of them as internal recordkeeping things, not as internationally-recognized call letters, which is about how the CBC treats them these days. (And yes, they can be five letters.)

Note that any CBC callsigns used internationally on shortwave are in the allocated Canadian CF-CK block - CKZN St. John's, CKZU Vancouver, and the various CK- calls that were used by the Radio Canada International transmitters at Sackville back when it used call letters at all.

The ITU (which allocates call blocks) doesn't require the use of calls for domestic broadcasters at all, and outside the Americas, they're not used for that purpose. In many South and Central American countries, stations are given call letters but never use them on the air. The CBC now functions more or less the same way. <P ID="signature">______________
