So Now What Are You Going To Do???

Whether you've escaped the latest CC purging as an employee of theirs or if you're on the outside looking in and hoping against hope your company isn't "next", what are you going to do now that, once again, you've seen the whole sorry scenario unfold? You got into the business to be a jock...nothing at all wrong with that. Maybe news is your bag and perhaps you want no part of the talent end and are more interested in actual, hands on, nuts and bolts engineering...where do you go from here? Do you actually have hope some day some owner will come along and let you jock? Are you not aware STUPID ownership and STUPID management wanted to get rid of you for years just as soon as the first automation systems came out? Can you not see the "do it on the cheap" trends? If you are a Chief Engineer, are you not aware you are probably the most hated person at the station because STUPID management and ownership wanted to get rid of you also for years? Radio is circling the drain, people! Not because of you, but because of the "do it on the cheap" mentality of STUPID management and ownership! They have flushed localism down the toilet. Station after station has flushed great talent down the toilet ONLY to replace them with cheap, substitutes without talent (exactly what a STUPID female GM did with Jim Bishop at WDBO). (Go ahead GM, tell me how wrong I am...you don't have the guts, Dummy). Radio wants local advertisers but without any local commitment. STUPID management and ownership have destroyed radio. You won't jock again. You won't be a real news person again. You have been sold out. You have been "defecated" on. Radio will become nothing more than a collection of PI deals repeating the phone number 25 times. (more)

Radio is on the way to becoming a collection of infomercials with con-artists promoting the magic pill which will cure everything (except management stupidity). The time has come to make your own moves. Radio will never be what you want it to be. Its time to get out and let the stupidity remain. Typewriter repairmen went out and learned other fields. My friends, its time you did the same!

DXDXDX, is this the same Jim that does Traffic for WMMO?
BTW, I'm currently Promotions Intern for Power 95.3 & Star 94.5, so I'm in that building almost every week now.
I'm learning a few tricks here & there that I can start applying to at WPRK 91.5.
There's also been some moving from office to office inside there, so some restructuring seems to be going on.

I've been on-air for free since 2005 on WPRK-FM 91.5.
If Cox Radio doesn't hire me to be on-air after my internship is over, it's volunteering WPRK as a hobby all the way.
I love the freedom & my loyal weekly listeners.
And I don't want my love for radio to diminish by corporate powers.

Hey DJ MO, i know your new to radio, and your right about the female GM, bigger
problem is the Male OM, but you just outed yourself big time. The management there
reads these boards, and one post's all the time. trust me , they will show that to the
female GM, and they will know its you. And the male OM, who fires at the drop of a hat,
Makes him feel powerful, will nail you, or have it done.

It's pretty simple. The stations still need content. They just don't want to pay for it. So if you're really good and have lots of local connections, create a company that provides localized content for these stations at a discount prince. That's what Metro Traffic did 25 years ago. They came up with a way for stations to get local traffic reports without hiring people to do it. You want to have fun on the air? Find a way to do it as an outside contractor. Companies don't want to get tied up with a lot of employees who expect benefits. If you can take care of your own health care, your own life insurance, your own payroll & billing system, then put together a business plan that makes them an offer they can't refuse. You have to speak their language. If you do, you may get to do what you want. Especially if these managers already know and like you.

Shoothoops, I wasn't the one who talked crap about the female GM.
It was DXDXDX who said all those mean things.
I was just stating that office locations have moved inside the building while I was there.
Not sure if the restructuring is true, but that's just speculation on my behalf.
I'm sure that now WDBO is on FM, that's why they're moving offices around.
Don't twist & turn what I never said.

Sorry, I don't work for WMMO, my name is not Jim and no longer work in the Orlando market or practice there, although some of my clients do.

I'm not asking if you were Jim.
I was asking if you were talking about the Jim I know.
I'm assuming the Jim you're talking about is long gone.
So never mind.
You guys seem to like living in the past.

Oh, just so everyone else knows, I'm not really new to radio, either.
Did a little Digital Audio Imaging for Rock 104 in Gainesville back in 2002.
I've been on WPRK-FM 91.5 here in Orlando since 2005.
I also was Resident DJ for "The Perimeter" on WYKS-FM Kiss 105.3 in Gainesville from 2006-11.
Even did Board Op for Bobbie DePew's show on WLBE-AM 790 in 2006-07.
And I went to CSB School of Broadcasting back in 2007.

Maybe it's because I've been on this College station for too long (6 years!) that my mind screams "indie".
On both stations, I had the freedom to play & say what I want as long as there's no conflict of interest.
Maybe it's because you guys talk bad about radio a lot, putting fear into my mind.
But if I ever get an offer & it really isn't all that bad like what I hear, then I take back what I said about corporate radio.
So far, Cox Radio has treated me very well & shown me some things that are totally wrong from an outsider's perspective.
This internship I have is really a learning experience.
It's shown me that I'm willing to adapt as long as I keep enough integrity & still be myself.
And every time I'm at a Power 95.3 remote, I always end up doing the Party Rock shuffle. :D

I apologize to DJ MO, i read the post, then saw your's right after, it ran together, you are absolved of guilt my son. Now dxdxdx, i am glad i never made you mad!

I was surprised a few years ago at how easy it was to get the attention of small syndicators. If you're willing to work in spoken-word formats, start small and build, and can afford to do so, it's possible to get a weekend slot with a quality show. It helps if you already are on-air somewhere, but I'd bet the time has come when webcasts could also be a launchpad.

If you can document reliable, quality program delivery that meets network content and production standards, there are opportunities.
