So Stephen Yates has gone country???

I've been watching 96.3 which is in their cluster now (or was.) Hot AC, Jack FM, Rock, now Hip Hop?

Format roulette if I've ever seen it!

I'm a little out of touch with what's going on in Lufkin. Which one of his stations is doing Country? And is it satellite or local?

Same questions for KYKS. Are they satellited in?

Is ANYBODY doing local programming in the Luf/Nac market?

What the H-E double hockey sticks in going on? Fill us in. As for KYKS,,they are currently,,and have been for a long time,,being programmed by Danny Merrell. Sean Ericson does middays, and they are tracked for the rest of the day. They are extremely local sounding.

The other GAP stations in Lufkin are KTBQ--Classic Rock, and it's programmed locally, though totally tracked. KAFX 95.5-Hot AC programmed locally, live afternoons, tracked the rest, KSFA-AM-News Talk,,is satellite with a local morning show, and KVLL 94.7 is Scott Shannon's oldies format.

As of right now, there aren't any radio stations located in Nac....except the college station at SFA,,,KSAU 90.1.

The only competition to GAP is Yates. Competition may be too strong a word though. Annoyance would be better. Kind of like a mesquito buzzing around your ear.

Don't know all the ins and outs, but apparently, Yates was running KJCS under an LMA with Bill Vance of Prime Cor Communications.

Yates told the Lufkin TV station he decided to stop sending his payments to Vance, and he started writing the checks directly to Vance's creditors.

That's when Vance just shut KJCS down. Took it dark. Yates still has an option to buy KJCS if he desires.

Again, Vance shut down KJ 3 months after taking it back from Yates.

The word is, KYBI will change to country before the end of the month.
Good move considering he had low numbers on KYBI and a higher rated KJCS is gone.
Plus, he already has the KJ clients lined up at the door.

As for 96.3, the station was a startup during the beginning of "The Great Resession" and startups take a long time to build and this company ran out of cash fast with Star-96's expenses and $0 in sales. The station was leased to Bill Vance with Jack and the lease was canceled by The Turning Leaf due to a bad check and legal issues. The station came back with rock but was short lived after it was plagued with technical issues that finally killed it. Now, even though 2 Hip Hop's in this small of a market is a questionable, Yates is leasing it and has actually upgraded the station to full power for the first time in several years plus has applied for a C2 upgrade making it the same size station as KVLL, KJCS, KYBI & KSML-FM. So it finally looks like KZXL has a chance after all. But I still predict another format change or 2 before it stablizes.
