So they DID play some freestyle in Atlanta! Power 99

Power 99 (freestyle song, "If you leave me now" by Jaya recorded in an aircheck!)

I seriously don't remember half of these songs being played on Power 99!
http://airchecked.com/category/atlanta/99-7-wapw-power-99/#.TwH70zVSTJY

I didn't know they played so much pop rock. No wonder I unknowingly got into that sound and stuck with it. Half of those songs I don't even remember hearing until I listened to Star*94!

There was also a caller who called in saying "you suck!" because they weren't giving away money when she called in. Is the word "suck" really that old? And how come that slang word out of all were one of the ones to make it long term? Will "crunk" still be around in the year 2026? I had no idea "suck" was so old because it's still frequently used in the west coast along with "dude". "Dude" is equivalent to "shawty" in the southeast.

By the way; I wonder what today's airchecks will sound like down the road. Will internet station airchecks also be a thing of fascination down the road? What about HD and Satellite Radio airchecks? How would listeners feel if they knew about and found recordings of when they called in to a past station?

That was a big song on Power 99. They really did a decent job even though they played
way too much of those boy band songs (which nobody wants to hear these days).

THEN, Seattle Grunge, Nivrana, etc. started to roll...........and somebody decided that was the
next big thang.....and they pulled the Power. The 99X switch worked for about 6 or 7 years and
then it sunk like a rock.

BUT, if they had stuck with Power 99 it would be right up there (probably the Q100 of today) IMO.
The switch worked in the short run, but didn't in the long run. They pretty much put the nails in the
Atlanta Dance radio coffin, as nobody has dared touch it since.

Now, all you 99X fans jump on board and tell everybody how great it was, still is and will always be,
even though ratings say just the opposite.

Makes me wonder: If Power 99 did stick around, how would it have changed the landscape of Atlanta radio today? Would V103 still have had such an umblemished record of staunch long term success? I believe many of the current urbans are all a result of V103's huge success. Would there have been as many urbans today if Power 99 stuck around? Or would there have been more rhythmics and chr's trying to go after Power? Would Star*94 and the pop rock sound still have had the huge Atlanta chr success it had? Would Star*94 be forced to go strictly hot ac or more rhythmic instead of inbetween through most of the 90's?

Would Power 99 themselves have remained consistent and maintained the overall sound they carried in the past (without going more urban or another direction)? WHO would be the owners of that station today and what changes would they have made to the station? And would any of the pd's or md's from WBTS ever have been in charge of Power 99 instead of a new 95.5 The Beat (and if so, would those employees have been beneficial to Power or lead it down the same path as WBTS)?

I wonder how lively Atlanta's CHR scene would've been today if Power 99 was able to maintain a default chr win through the 90's the same way V103 was able to maintain a default urban win through the 90's. There would most likely be quite a few formats trying to follow V103 and Power 99, which would've caused quite a bit of rhythmics and rhythmic ac or rhythmic oldies instead of a bunch of urbans. The bass and freestyle scene combined would've been HUGE and probably would've even been recognized just as well as the Miami Bass scene!

I don't think Power 99 had that much of an effect on V-103 or the Urban stations. It was always
more of a CHR major/minor in Dance. But remember the Dance today which leans heavily Hip-Hop
(and you love so much) is not the same Dance that was around in 1993 (which I liked).

****Interesting that although Atlanta doesn't have a Dance station it's heard on about 10 different
stations in town. So, although we don't have an official station, add all that together and we
actually have a Rhythmic AC station (it's just hush hush undercover) 8).
