So WACR and WWKZ have switched...

Here's my question... one is in Columbus, and the other is in Tupelo. Has CC moved the WACR stick from Columbus to Tupelo, or has CC, as I suspect, switched two heritage stations to frequencies in the other's market?

Would love to know more about this...

Both station's call letters will remain in their respective markets; they just moved to different frequencies. WACR is now on 105.3, while WWKZ is on 103.9. The 103.9 frequency moved from Columbus to Tupelo (licensed to Okolona), and vice versa with 105.3 (still licensed to Aberdeen?). I believe this was one of the series of moves made to allow WQEN Gadsden, AL (103.7) to move its transmitter into Birmingham.

Actually, it is a move.

103.9/Columbus is apparently no more. 103.9 is now licensed to Okolona, and the tower site is on the south side of Tupelo. Signal should be very dense in town.

The station maintains its Class C2 status, if you were wondering.

Now, I suppose we could discuss the wisdom of moving the WWKZ program around yet again, but, I'll save that discussion for another day.

So, It's KZ-103 again.

Now, the 105.3 signal has a pending CP to move further south, to a spot just north of West Point. This signal would arguably put a better signal over the three cities of The Golden Triangle than the old WACR signal licensed to Columbus, since that tower was actually in Alabama. Under the old regime, the 60 dbu (1 mV/m) contour did not cover Starkville at all, and seems to end at or near the West Point city limits. My spies (and, as I have said, they are EVERYWHERE) have yet to tell me whether that move has been completed. But, it would be smart to have made those changes contemporaneous to one another.

Congratulations are in order, it would seem. These kind of moves take a lot of time and effort. I am sure they are glad to have gotten it done.

(Pardon me replying to my own posting)

Flipped over to 103.9 this morning to see if I could hear KZ...

Yup. Plenty loud, but, as one might predict, mixing with Earl, AR. Familiar-sounding jingle.

Question - 105.3 is suppose to move up to 50KW with a tower that looks like it will be just a little north of West Point... looking at the application for the CP, the contour protection study shows an area where there is the possibility of interference from WQJQ at 105.1 over the areas of Ackerman and Louisville. Now, neither station really hits the streets to try to get advertisers from either place, but my question is this... what if any real interference will there be? Secondly, does it really matter if there is interference since neither station really markets to these two towns?
______________

Since neither town is officially within the city-grade signals of either station, that probably won't be much of an issue. It may suck if you're a fan of one or both stations and you're having to play around with the radio to get the best signal, but that's the nature of beast when sandwiched in between two markets. In southern California, there's a lot of short-spacing between Los Angeles and San Diego frequencies and when you're in a place like Del Mar or Oceanside, which direction you point your radio can make a difference in if the L.A. stations drown out the S.D. stations and vice versa.

What would help in this case is if WQJQ were to move the transmitter closer in to Jackson, though that would mean even less of a signal into Louisville and Ackerman. But Clear Channel owns both stations, so signal interference in areas they don't really serve is probably not on their list of priorities.

This is true... Besides, CC couldn't move the WQJQ transmiter to much closer to Jackson without losing city grade coverage to Kosciusko (COL). Hey, they could always change the COL to Madison... opps... that one's already taken :)
______________

The Boswell family attempted to relicense 105.1 to Madison in early 90's... not long after the current transmitter site was built. The FCC said "no".

Well, at least that explains the id they started using when they upgraded... they were iding as Kosciusko:Madison:Ridgeland. I wonder if the FCC said no because there would have then been no FM liscenced to Kosciusko?

Back to 105.3 - I think they may be up to full power... both this morning and this afternoon, I tuned my radio to 105.3 and there they were... of course you could hear WQJQ over them, but they were definitely there...
______________
