So what does XTRA 910 do now?

It's now official - Jim Rome is headed for CBS Sports Radio in January. Do they give Cesmat more time? Does "Fox" Sports Radio hire a guy for that time period? Does CC convince SeeBS to not blow up one of their FMs and let XTRA affiliate with the new network?

Can CBS Sports Radio put him on XTRA? CBS (for now) has no outlet for that network in the Phoenix market, so it would make sense for them to contract with XTRA, unless XTRA wants to part ways.

We've had this discussion recently, but it's doubtful that CBS blows up KMLE, KOOL or KZON for sports talk. KMLE has some issues, but CBS doesn't want to concede the Country audience to Clear Channel, and I assume all three stations bill well right now.

Of course, CBS could buy another signal, but that seems unlikely.

This press release from SeeBS shows the affiliates owned by themselves and Cumulus that will be there on Day One. No Phoenix SeeBS O&O is listed. KCUB Tucson is one of the Cumulus stations that will carry some shows, but not run the network 24/7.

If I'm not mistaken, CBS just re-launched KMLE with a new image and new talent. Not the sort of thing you do to a station you're about to blow up.

I am sure that was pretty cheap for them to do. The talent that they have is cheap compared to the talent was there. They are just hanging on until 2013 when we have sports 107.9

An interesting list because there's one major sports market not on that list: Phoenix. CBS Sports is not going to overlook one of the twelve major sports markets while providing coverage to ten of the other twelve and various other markets like Tucson (Denver isn't included as one of the twelve because CBS doesn't own any stations in Denver as of 2008). As such, I believe the question isn't "if" CBS will have a sports station in Phoenix, it's "when" and "where."

Let the speculation begin! ;D

2013 is three months away. I'm going to take a wild guess and say the talent that was there is being paid through the end of the year anyway. Why get rid of them, spend new money on new talent when you're still paying the old talent, and then blow the whole thing up in three months?

There is still KDUS, which at least still has a good daytime signal. They may want to trade Yahoo! for CBS. Then, there are also the underperforming FM stations (some of which have changed formats three times already this year) which currently has a good dose of Pink in their playlist! ;D

Might as well. Yahoo Sports Radio is just a shadow of what it was as One-on-One and Sporting News Radio. If it went off the air, I doubt that too many people would miss it.

Which South Mountain sticks are underperforming? If full-market FM coverage isn't available, CBS should just affiliate with one of the AMs.

Good luck with that. There are no South Mountain sticks available. Take away the stereo pilot from an edge-of-market station like 103.9, and that will increase market coverage to 80 percent or even higher. What would you rather have, a station with 80 percent market coverage full time, or an AM with full market coverage during the day and just 30% at night? I'd go with the FM mono with static rather than the lo-fi AM station.

There's a rimshot FM in Houston doing sports talk, and they're hanging in there and making money. John Davis could probably shine some more light on that since he knows that market. Being the number two rated sports-talk station in Phoenix could still bring in more billings than what 97.5 or 103.9 is currently programming.
