I should make it known that I did not know about this thread until a friend told me about it at lunch today.
Thanks to the few people who thought I did not suck on the air, and to the people who hated my show, I am sorry I could not entertain you. To say that I was a disgrace to Triad radio is a bit harsh. I don’t want to ramble about my glory but I was generally always in the top 3 in my demo, and in fact received a ratings bonus after I was fired. Not only that, I was successful in the market for almost 5 years and my show and the station survived various format flips by other stations. Again, not to boast, I think I did decent to stay in the top three given the fact that there were three urban stations in the market.
I am currently working outside of radio and things are great. Did I mention I met the President of the United States last Wednesday? That was a good time, and is something I never would have imagined one year ago. Getting fired was a huge hit to the good old self esteem and was a eye opening experience.
Now to get back to the purpose of this thread. Jeff McHugh was a great PD and he set KZL up for great success. He had an incredibly talented staff and was not the type of boss that would limit what personalities could do on the air. If ratings were good, he would give guidance, but he would not try to do the show for you. First Terrie Knight left, then Matthews, and then I was given the boot. Losing three personalities in less than one year is never good, no matter the stations previous success.
Here is a perfect example of the change in the tide at KZL. It was my very last air check with Jeff, and the first with Goodman. At the end of the air check, Jeff mentioned that it was a so-so show, and Goodman mentioned that he thought it was great. Nothing else to say there. Goodman also constantly nagged me about doing “Guest DJ’s” during the Top 8 at 8, which is something I was very opposed to because that is something that you do when you target 12 year olds. By no means am I saying Goodman is a bad PD, we simply are two extremely different types of people that did not see eye to eye. Tripper seems to be more Goodman’s type as he does the “Guest DJ” thing.
Mike Klein was a person that I had chatted with on many occasions before he was hired at KZL and I always thought he was a good jock. To bad I only worked with him for two weeks or so. I know most of the people on here use bogus names because radio is your livelihood and I completely respect that. I on the other hand will continue to speak my mind as I always have. Mike needs to be moved to afternoons and Goodman needs to track mid-days. While I am making suggestions, Goodman should stop using Radio Online for all of his show prep. I can’t tell you the number of times I have gotten in the car around 5:30 p.m. and hear him ramble on about some statistic that really isn’t very interesting. Pay attention, you will here statistics left and right.
I would have to agree that KZL used to be more ambitious when it came to new music. When the Beat flipped, KZL no longer had any reason to be early on music. I am sure they are riding out research and not taking any chances what so ever. I was always a huge fan of playing the new hits because I genuinely think people like to hear great new music as well as what they are familiar with. Mixing the two isn’t the easiest but we used to do it quite well.
I have heard Tripper is a really nice guy and wish him no ill-will what so ever. To my understanding, he used to be a Producer for a morning show in Nashville. If that is true, I feel bad that he was brought straight into the night show position. It is a very different world but the best of luck to him.
I don’t know anything about Murphy’s numbers but I am sure they are as good as they have always been. He is a very talented host and a great guy.
I guess this is the part where people will start tearing apart each paragraph that I have written. That is fine because I completely understand because we all “know it all” and have the need to be heard.
And to the guy that said I sucked… I just got 10 minutes of tsr (time spent reading) from you. The last time I checked, it did not matter if you were loved or hated, what mattered the most is that you could get peoples attention and make them listen.
Have a good one.
