From what I've heard, it's not history yet, but it is in trouble. The 107.9 signal has either a new owner or a new LMA partner, which means a new format, and 102.1 is struggling last I heard. Its owner filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and there is, or at least was, a rumor that another broadcaster (the one that bought 107.9) is going to buy it as quickly as it can.

WWBR changed owners and went to a Adult Album Alternative format when the original owner died and the widow decided to sell it to a new station group being formed. They are now known as WTYD, 107.9 the tide. It has a 92.3 simulcast in Deltaville(northern neck) on what used to be a oldies station. WWHV's owner is going bankrupt, thus the morning show is NO longer syndicated and the website is NO longer in existence and neither is the web streaming going on anymore. I look for that station to be off the air I think probably by the end of next year, if not before then. Only so much you can do with a station that only covers a third of a entire listening area.
You know you are going to have ratings issues if you are trying to use two stations as a unified coverage and the whole area is NOT covered. There were slight parts of Norfolk and a lot of Hampton NOT covered by either 107.9 or 102.1. The thing that works out here in Richmond with WBBT and WARV is that it's more or less a unified coverage area when you get the stations together. It got into the top 10 it's first official book because of the fact that the area had coverage to get it.
WWHV might see a new format, but really folks, I see it dead in the water. Unless it's brought back with 107.9(which would need a boost in wattage to get it to cover hampton and some of norfolk), 102.1 in Norfolk is dead.

Before 107.9 changed owners, Sherry Campana pulled the TSA that she (and previously Jim had) with On Top Communications (WWHV/102.1). On Top just stopped paying the Campanas the monthly rate (~$11,500/mo).
During WWHV's early days, On Top really wanted Peninsula coverage. As Dan mentioned, 102.1 signal wasn't (and still isn't) cutting it over there. There were three signals that On Top could use WSRV/92.3, WXGM/99.1 and WWBR/107.9 to simulcast its 102.1 signal. 99.1 is the best and 107.9 is the worst. 99.1 was too expensive to use/buy for On Top so all On Top had left was two frequencies Jim Campana controlled. Jim wasn't giving up on 92.3 so he agreed to sell 107.9 to On Top for $1.8M. An immediate TSA started and Hot was put on 107.9.
107.9's far away signal actually garnered a 0.1 and 0.2 (12+ demo) a couple of times in the ratings. In one Book, it got a 1.0 in the younger demos in the morning.
I was the original webmaster for Hot for over two years. I was dumped (I actually found out from a third party in another state I was being replaced!) for a company that one of On Top's new investors had (how convenient; I guess I would have done the same thing too if I just got $15M in much needed cash). I didn't get paid the last two months (took 'em to court and won). Eventually, On Top stopped paying the new company after a year and a half...
I hear that The Supreme Team morning show was owed boatloads of money. They were replaced with the much cheaper syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show just after one year. They had replaced the RPMS...
I'm not sure what will happen. All of On Top's stations get some ratings. Maybe they are blowing through cash. A LOT of spots I hear on Hot are mom-and-pops. Can't be making much running those...

Well, 102.1 can be heard in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake. There's probably 1 million people in those four cities. 102.1 isn't a full market signal but with the right programming AND sales force, I think it can make money. Below are the last five ratings periods for WWHV:
2.9, 2.3, 2.1, 2.3, 2.7
Not too shabby for a non-full market station that is competing with a very good Urban (WOWI), Rhythmic (WVNZ) and Urban AC (WKUS). And don't forget the other Urban AC WVKL and several college stations (WNSB, WHOV, WRVS...)

Glad to hear WWHV is History! They were interferring with my reception of 102.1 out of Richmond. (Denbigh resident)
