So what IS the FCC doing these days?

In a post today (10/13) about the Central Ohio LP situation, Trick_Magnet asked, “Someone explain to me what the FCC is doing these days.”

What is the FCC doing these days? They're gearing up to become the "Federal Content Commission". Worrying too much about mundane matters like LP would take away from the upcoming indecency campaign. If you think they got carried away in '03 and '04, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Despite the press about how bright he is, new chairman Kevin Martin sounds like a dummy. Example: At a recent forum in Miami, he spoke enthusiastically about the marked increase in indecency complaints the FCC has seen recently, noting growth from a hundred complaints in 1999 to thousands yearly today. Well, duh! With the explosion in internet access and usage, the indecency crusaders can give their flocks a way to file complaints in seconds from the comfort of their judgmental easy chairs. OBVIOUSLY there is going to be an automatic explosion in complaints, when the filing process goes from obscure and effortful to in-your-face and excrutiatingly simple. Martin’s logic that the indecency complaint explosion proves there’s been a big increase in indecent programming makes as much sense as handing out 200 million free-Pepsi coupons and then saying that consumption data proves that taste preferences have suddenly shifted from Coke to Pepsi.

And to fuel the fire, the FCC is already taking steps to make the process even easier, setting up "easy complaint" pages and encouraging the public to file. I'm usually pretty low-key about things, but this all makes me want to puke. Yes, Kevin Martin sounds like an idiot, and the FCC is turning into (more of) a joke.

Why worry about getting LP right when someone said a bad word?<P ID="signature">______________
