Well I really dont like Mega and their programing from the beginning. But I thought Mega was doing great with their Regaton, hi-hop and all the music they played. I thought it wasgoing to steal fans from party 104.9 Well at least all the hispanic ones. They played J-Lo, Black eyed peas, and all that kinda stuff. Now they dont play that, is bilingual radio dead? Tejano played nortenas and tejano and its dead. Now Mega played different music and now its dying. Why? Are the only persons who listen to spanish radio only spanish speaking?? Are there any bilinguals that that listen to spanish or do they all listen to other types of music?

What it comes down to is money...they believe that the older generation of Latinos are the only ones who can generate money for them. Thats why now they are targeting the age group of 35 -50 thinking that now advertisers will want to buy time slots. No longer are they Latino and Proud...their glory days are over and now with the new PD the music and programming isnt going to get any better.
Unfortunatly they are making changes in their music and air staff. Rumor has it that the new PD is going to fire most of the original air staff to bring in his own personal and dear friends...that should be interesting...jocks that dont know anything about our city!

THATS TOO BAD...I WOULD HOPE SOON THAT YOU YOURSELF BE GONE...I AGREE WITH 411...KARMA IS A BITCH! [EDIT] THOSE 2 BACKSTABBERS HAVE EVERYONE FOOLED. IM GLAD BO DID WHAT HE DID...IT WAS LONG OVERDUE!!!! PROPS GO TO BO FOR STILL BEING PROFESSIONAL ON THE AIR WITH THEM...I WOULD HAVE OUTED THEM AND AIRED ALL THEIR DIRTY LAUNDRY.
GOOD LUCK TO THE STATION...THEY ARE REALLY GOING TO NEED IT AND IF THEY START LOSING MONEY THEY CAN JUST ASK HOLLYWOOD FOR SOME OF HIS DEALER MONEY. CLEAR CHANNEL MUST BE THE ONLY STATION TO HAVE THEIR OWN DEALER...BE CAREFUL THOUGH, HES BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE DEALS GONE BAD...DID YOU GUYS TRULY BELIEVE HE WAS ROBBED?

[EDIT-name calling]

What happend with Bo? And yes that really sucks that they are no longer latino and proud. We need the original mega to come back, but also include cumbias, and nortenas.

Well....Bo hit record on voxpro and the mic stayed on and everything that was said between the two female co-hosts was recorded. Two minutes later Bo walks back in the studio and stops voxpro and presses PLAY and tells them "so this is what you say about me after I walk out?"...needless to say., the ladies were stunned!!!!
After that incident the ladies tried to go to management and complain about Bo invading privacy. Maybe he was wrong in doing this but he had every right to know.

The current format is decidedly 18-34... most of the song have very little 35+ appeal.

Oh poor Bo, no one likes him, well, that's a shocker ::). It may be the hair. Think about it. I personally think that his show has not been that great. But that's just me.

Oh yes, we surely NEED the original Mega to come back right now! It lasted all of what? Two years? Great shelf life that had, let me tell you. It's hard for someone to amaze me on the boards these days, but you sir have accomplished just that. Bo Corona's quest to be on every active frequency in the City Of Houston at some point continues!! I wonder who's next?

I don't think its a quest to be on every frequency in the city. I know one cat who has been on the following frequencies and it sure wasn't a quest. It just worked out that way.
AM
610
650
900
920
1070 (3 times)
1110
1230 (3 times)
1270 Bay City
FM

97.5
98.5
100.3
100.7
102.9
103.3
104.9 (2 times) Rosenberg
106.9 (2 times)

It wasn't a quest when I was at the above frequencies.

I was counting how many frequencies in houston I've been on and I came up with 7 and I've never been fired from any of them and non of the seven were from the same company either!

Ah yes, but you sir are a Houston Legend and have been on the air for more decades than a fair amount of people on this board have even been alive. BTW, when were you are 900? I can't remember that period for the life of me. For you Mr. Texmex I'll simply answer yes, as anything else would only add to the sarcasm I have previously spewed. Thanks for keeping up. ;D

In 1974, I left 1270 KIOX and went to KIKR Conroe. At that time KIKR had just changed call letters from KMCO. KIKR was on AM-900. It was 500 watts directional with a 117 watt pre-sunrise. The Owens family owned KIKR, KNRO 106.9 and The Conroe Courier. Years later, they sold KNRO and invested a lot of money in getting the frequency moved to AM-880. Brilliant! Everyonbe had a good laugh on that one.

One morning with my little 117 watts, my song faded away as Nueve Doublay-OOOOO faded in. The studio wasn't far from the transmitter and all of my readings were correct. AM-900 was considered a Mexican clear channel. That station is XEW, located in Mexico City with 250,000 watts. After 12 minutes, KIKR faded back in.

XEW was always using the intro music to The Supremes "Reflections."

Hence:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gN8SEEqUBE8&mode=related&search=

Somebody in their production department really must have liked it for their promos or something. I didn't know. It was usually accompanied by a heavy duty Spanish speaking voice rolling the "Rs" and so on.

Had no idea what he was saying. This gringo doesn't know the lingo.

But, I knew I was on the right frequency. At least I understood, (Phoenetical here) NU-WAY-VAY DOUBLEE OOOOOOOO

BTW, I was on AM-920 KTLW twice, 1972 & 1975.
100.3 KILT 1984-1997 and again 2001-2002.

I had forgotten all about KIKR originating on 900. I knew you had worked at KIKR back in the 70's, and can only imagine how badly the Owens' kicked themselves for that wonderful decision to sell 106.9. XEW isn't still running at 250,000 watts today, are they? I only know of one station in the U.S. that runs this type of power, and would assume that stations like KREH wouldn't even exist if XEW was still running a blowtorch like that.

The Owens were newspaper people. They didn't have a clue about radio. Therefore, they most likely didn't kick themselves. As far as XEW's power is concerned, I am quite sure, David Eduardo will straighten us out on the one.

A lot of familiar names came through the KIKR/KNRO studios while I was there including:

Royce Edward Guinn (deceased)
Bill Moffett
Larry Galla
Mike Mollett
Lana Hughes
Tom Bacon

There were others who graced those studios after I left, who wound up in Houston radio.

Wow Chuck!

I think you even have ME beat. Let's see:

88.7 - KUHF
1430 - KCOH
102.1 - KLYX
92.5 - KYND
790 - KULF
100.3 - KILT (Twice)
610 - KILT
96.5 - (KAUM, KSRR & KKHT)
101.1 - KLOL (Twice)
94.5 - KLDE
97.9 - KFMK
740 - KTRH (Twice)
98.5 - (KHYS)
103.3 - (KJOJ)
95.7 - KIKK
107.5 - (KZFX & KLDE)
93.7 - KKRW

I think that's all. Of course, I was on about 125 different frequencies when I did Oldies for the ABC Radio Network, and I was nationwide on XM. But you know what? I never considered it to be a QUEST. It was a career. I've known Bo Corona for years, and I surely believe that he looks at it the same way. The man's trying to make a living, and there's no crime in that. Best of luck to you, Bo! I know you'll land on your feet someplace good.

It's always been 250 kw on license; for a while in the 90's they were running 100 kw to save power, given the sad state of AM in Mexico (even the big talkers are on FM now). When I visited the site in 1963, there were 3 250 kw transmitters, run in alternating 2 hour shifts. There were also some 10 kw SW transmitters, always running too.

At http://www.davidgleason.com/Mexico-Photos-E.htm and near the bottom are a number of pictures of XEW, including one of me at about age 15 inside a 250 kw transmitter with the chief engineer who built the rigs.
