So,...What Would You call It?

Exactamundo! They DO NOT want to buy another "radio"! How many times has that been stated on these very boards?

It's your choice. You can suffer with what's available for free, or spend a few bucks. It doesn't matter to me one bit. I get paid the same either way.

I'm just trying to help.

I have already decided that sat radio doesn't twist my knobs. My new car (of 2 years ago) had a trial sub. I never renewed it.

My comments however were directed at the other Boomers (technically, I am a pre-Boomer but don't seem to have a label for my generation).

People listen to satellite radio because they like to. The selection of music has gone down a lot in the past few years though. For example, on the 60s channel. I remember when we got XM they said they had 3,000 songs on their playlist. They had the IT countdown of every rated song from the 50s to now. Now they probably have about 500 songs on the 60s and 70s channels, maybe less.

People don't realize how many businesses carry satellite radio channels as background. I've walked into numerous stores and restaurants with satellite channels on (usually channels like The Blend). It also fills a hole for all the markets that don't have certain formats on the radio. For example, here in Charleston we don't have an oldies station. The 60s channel fills that format.

That's it for now, as I gotta catch a red-eye, in the Morning to the left coast. Apparently, I have been appointed the new Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks.....somethin' about a Consultant making a bad call?????????????

He'll teach them how to deflate their balls.

Thank you, Post #44, for re-clarifying what I have said more times, than Carter has liver pills...death of a station, via some Pencilneck shortening the playlist.
At night, I recharge my pod player, out of self-defense,...+plus a handy flash drive is cool too!

I'd like to know when XM said they had 3000 songs on their playlist, and if it was in a specific format, or across the board in all genres. I never recall it being that big, and I knew a lot of the programmers. They never bragged about the size of their playlists. Especially for the mainstream formats. Even the classical formats were Top 40, playing the popular war horses.

Which is why you are not programming in 2015 because you demonstrate over and over why you just don't understand the basic principals of good radio programming practice in addition to a demonstrable lack of proficiency in the written and spoken word.

I don't think XM ever said any of their channels had that deep of a library, by the way. They DID say that there was a wide variety of channels and that you would find more choice than OTA radio. Which is true and still is. The alternative channels certainly did have fairly tight rotations because I would hear a lot of currents enough to become familiar with them.

Well,...Dud-fan, ol' bastion of alleged knowledge, you are standing on the grass, above the septic tank, and you don't understand where the bad smell is coming from. I do,...as I always have. I type, and spell, as I feel...and I feel snowflakes about now *************..........snowflakes, falling down from your last post, obscuring the vision of some, that you "Know". We, collectively, know this: You are a member of the 4-to-5 share club, to never see double-digit ratings, unless they are printed, in a past book. This is what short-shallow playlists, and the whims of the labels have Graced you with. Behold, EARTH FM, beats Big stick
MY 102, in 12+. Due to their poor coverage, most wrote them off, but Whhhhhhaaaaaaaaallllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Boggles the mind, don't it?

You are a member of the 4-to-5 share club,

Most stations in many many markets would LOVE to have a 12+ 4 or 5 share, because that would put them in the Top 5 or at worst Top 10.

In L.A. a 5 share puts you #2. In NYC, a 5 share puts you #5 in the market. In D.C., a 5 share puts you #6. In Greenville-Spartanburg, even a 4-share puts you in the Top 10 and above "Earth."

It's a rare, rare thing for ANY station in be in the double digits in 2015 in most markets or in the past 15 years. The only exception is usually the all-Christmas stations.

But lets not get facts (or language skills) get in the way of a sad cry for attention, shall we? I'm sorry you were fired and then deemed unhireable 20 years ago, but your perspective is obsolete of an industry that has changed dramatically and continues to change dramatically. I hope your comic book store continues to do well in the face of Amazon and the like.

Well,...Dudley,...incorrect as always, about everything. Never owned(or worked at) any comic book store. Was never fired from any Radio job; just ask Smack Taylor, he knows. So, in the GSP market, what would a 10-share do? Also, I can't help, but notice that you are Posting on Company time. If someone, higher up the Pocketbook trail, has an Epiphany of about how much you cost, versus how much the station could be making,...done, as you do it, today......
You might be.......Voted Off The Island!

Boooooooooooyeeeeeeeeeeeow!

You are only partially correct. Boomers (and perhaps everyone else) wouldn't mind paying a reasonable subscription cost for their favorite music but they want it in more than one location. Right now sat radio exists primarily in vehicles. I don't spend much time in my vehicle. Perhaps if I did I would subscribe. I do spend a lot of time on my computer but there are hundreds of choices I can make on the computer and they don't cost a thing. Sat radio is great for truckers and others who spend lots of time out in the sticks. For most Boomers, most of whom are now retired, it makes little sense. Especially since I already own most of the music they play.

I dont know any baby boomers who are retired personally since the retirement age is more 70 now than 65.

Good. Mind moving further away? My eyes are burning...
