So whats the deal with ABC15?

Ok one night this week Katie does the newscast solo. The next night she has Jonathan Elias and now tonight she has Jon Dupre. Is this wacky or what??

A former ABC15 insider told me that Katie and Jonathan don't get along. That said, it's hard to get good ratings when your star news team doesn't have good chemistry.

I'm guessing that ABC 15 is probably doing focus groups and/or watching the ratings while they play musical anchors.

How do you not get along with Katie Raml?

Uh, well...maybe if you happen to believe in ethics in journalism? Maybe Elias didn't like her well-documented political activism.
Anyway, this is just desperate tinkering from the cellar-dwellers.

I watched the 5:00 newscast and saw Dupre there by himself and I wondered what was going on. Normally I would think that the others are "on assignment." I doubt they would drop Katie since she just won an Emmy. Elias might be the odd person out. Too bad because he is a good speaker and has a unique look.

unless Scripps and ABC 15's management are even bigger dolts than I think they are. This is a business, and the news team they have in now has been completely unsuccessful over 3 years in bringing in new viewers and advertising revenue. Afraid Emmy's generally don't mean squat in the real world, and in Katie Raml's case she was only competing for her's against the other anchors at ABC 15. Big deal. Apparently they were one of the few stations to bother to submit their work this time around.
15 has a BIG mountain to climb and this market is shifting more and more to the Spanish-language stations.

ABC-15 has been using a solo weekend anchor on the Friday night shows for a while now. Besides the main anchors being off, I also think that Bill Bellis, their chief meteorologist takes Friday's off too.

Re: Everything/everyone is on the table

All excellent points. An anchor could save the CEO's entire family and still get fired if the ratings aren't coming in. I think that a recently won Emmy still has a little cache to it.

The deal with ABC15?

All great points and good observations...so I'll add a few cents here and there.

First, a few people I know say that...many in the ABC 15 newsroom have been "waiting" so to speak for Elias to leave...which is to say, they figured he would have ended his employment with 15 by now. Especially since former VP and GM John Culliton is gone. Elias and Culliton have a storied history together both professionally and personally...they happen to be really good friends outside of the newsroom. From what I hear...Elias and many of the "main desk", "main show" players are less than friendly to each other...some say Elias is a little too free with the "here is what you need to do" type advice. As you can imagine, unsolicited career, performance, personality advice is not really met with open arms in the talent side of this business...giving advice without being asked can and does get ugly.

As for the parade of anchors...it is that time of the year to squeeze in last minute days off and vacation time before November sweeps...some are taking days to work on special reports and sweeps pieces...this may or may not be the reason for 15's anchor juggling.

Having said all that..."Nascar_Red" is on track here (get it? heh.)...ABC 15 like many other ABC affilliate stations around the country are trying to take advantage of the popular Sunday night primetime line up by adjusting their "main anchor" schedules...putting the "mains" on a Sunday through Thursday schedule...and the weekend crew works Friday and Saturday.

In addition, if you remember back a few years ago...the ABC 15 anchor line up included Kris Long, Robin Sewell, and Cameron Harper and back then the same kind of rotating anchor, rotating night, rotating dual / solo anchor stuff was the norm.

That is all for now...hope this adds something to the discussion.

Makes sense Guru.
Perhaps the only thing different in this case is that, when Culliton had to split (I hear he certainly has a thing for morning anchors where he's worked), he didn't go on to another station. He worked out some deal with a consulting firm in CA. I believe he and Elias were together in Minneapolis and Los Angeles before here. Maybe Elias has nowhere else to go?
If he does leave, ABC 15 will truly be Romper Room. He's the only one with any significant news experience.

True...Culliton went to a consulting / research firm based in CA. As for the morning show anchors...I guess you could say that is a true statement. Culliton was the GM at WCCO Minneapolis MN and he is married with children to former WCCO morning show anchor Cindy Hillger...(former because she followed her husband to CA after her contract at WCCO ended.

> Maybe Elias has nowhere else to go?

That may be true...but he has connections and a killer resume. The right situation with the right paycheck is all it takes.

I tend to agree with you. The last time I watched 15...(keep in mind I'm on the talent side of the biz so I am extra critical)...I just kept thinking about the talent pool there...kind of all over the board if you think about it. Some look like they belong in Phx others look like they just graduated from the 8th grade. This may be the root reason the ratings are poor...it comes down to trust and credibility.

Well, maybe one more...

Right -- and maybe something much more recent according to scuttlebutt floating around the shop and postings on other boards earlier in the year referring to discovered emails, etc. If true, this could have been a factor in the abrupt exit. (I did say "I hear...")

Right on -- couldn't agree more.

Some day I would love to hear your comments about the talent at Channel 2 in Flagstaff.

How do you NOT get along with Katie Raml?

She's a great talent as well as star of the show. Her delivery is right on the mark and her long time local ties at ASU's Walter Cronkite College are perfect. She should stay on 15 and keep us smiling...

Hope Elias sees your post! That should make his day. :)
Your fan or co-worker exuberance is fine, but I'm not sure how getting a BA a couple of years ago at Cronkite (by the way it's a School at ASU not a College) with thousands of others qualifies as long-time ties or makes her unique around here? Too bad she skipped class the day they covered ethics.
Keep up your optimism.

Kati IS a local. She went to Saguaro High School as well as ASU.

As for her ethics, she should not be an MC at political events for any party or cause. Stick to animal shelter fundraisers and the like.
