So where does this leave WKDN?

As I said in the latest WIP/WYSP thread, the switch of 94.1 to all-sports WIP says to me that CBS is in the running to get WKDN from Harold Camping. It means that if they win the bidding, they'll be all set to jettison 610 to get back under the ownership cap.

Either way, I think we'll have an all-news FM in Philly by the end of the year. If Merlin gets it, it will become Philly's version of WEMP and WWWN, and if CBS gets it I expect we'll get KYW-FM.

My money is on CBS getting it and the result will be KYW-FM.

I hope jhguthlac is correct and CBS gets 106.9 and simulcasts KYW on it. I also agree that if that doesn't happen, there's a strong likelihood that Merlin Media will buy 106.9 and put their own news station on it. From the sounds of Merlin's NYC and Chicago stations, I'd rather have KYW.

With the current rules, does CBS have to sell a station if the win the bidding for 106.9? Does someone buy 610 from CBS? Would CBS put KYW also on 106.9 or does WYSP go there?

CBS is not "full" in Philly and can own another FM in that market. By the way, some years ago (2005 I believe) CBS traded Family stations (Harold Camping's group) the old 610 KFRC in San Fransisco for their FM, 106.9, KEAR in San Fransisco. Tell me that's not an incredible irony, trading 610 for 106.9 in San Fran....could history play out the same way again in another market?

I think you're right.

In markets with 20 or more independent media voices one owner can own 2 TV stations and 5 radio stations. In markets with more than 10 but fewer than 20, an owner can own 2 TV stations and 4 radio stations.

An independent media voice is a full power radio station, full power TV station, cable system, or major newspaper.

I count 15 media voices in the Philadelphia Market:
WEAZ-FM Radio, Inc.
CBS
Clear Channel
Greater Media
Beasley
Radio One
WHYY
University of Penn
Temple University
Salem
Disney/ABC
Fox
Comcast/NBC
Tribune
Philadelphia Newspapers

Let me know if I'm missing any. Not sure if I should count the owners of full power stations in Trenton or Wilmington.

Unless I'm missing 4 media voices, they already own one more than they should. So, I must be missing 4.

In any event, they're already full.

Nothing stops them from exchanging an AM for an FM, though. They're not full on FMs.

If we're talking television market, there's WMGM-TV, WYBE, WTVE, WFMZ, WMCN, WUVP, and WNJS.

The FCC doc I was pulling from says "the cable company" in the market. Not sure if they're willing to count more than one.

Also not sure if direct national media voices (like DirecTV or Dish Network) count.

Are all those TV stations full power and independently owned (from each other and from the others listed)?

So, I'm sure we're over 20. In any event, CBS is at 5 radio and 2 TV. They're maxed out. So, if they acquired a third FM, they'd have to get rid of another radio station.

Yes, they're all full power and independently owned. Although some of them (like WYBE, WTVE, and WMCN) are total wastes and WUVP is foreign language.

If national media voices counted every market would have hundreds since almost every newspaper is online and there are tons of cable channels.

You missed a few:

Pax/I Network, Levas Communications, Davidson Media, Langer Broadcasting, WVCH Communications, WNAP, Inc., Marconi Licenses, LLC, Global Radio, LLC, Mount Ocean Media, LLC, Chester County Radio, Inc, Route 81 Radio, LLC.

That easily takes the number of voices over 20.

As well they should be counted. It shows how pointless such rules made decades ago are. Clinging to ancient regulations that have no application to how people live today benefits no one.
