So......where's my Portland numbers at?

"Have I nailed it yet?"

I gotta say, you give alot for nothing. We'll see if Cary reads this board. Actually, since I just mentioned his name, he'll be reading this within 30 seconds of it being posted. He's that good--or else, he's that aware of when his name is used in vain.

Now, just for curiosity sake, what do you do with CYY?

If changing personel is NOT an option, then I go right after WHOM, maybe a brighter AC version, but right after them. Here's why:

WHOM is not "home" to anywhere. Listen to them for two hours and you could think you're listening to a NH radio station. That is their achilles heel. Attack it. Become Portland's Lite. If you want to be corny (please don't) and use a "lighthouse" brand. Better yet, you could probably just keep Coast and change the positioning brand; imaging, etc. Coast is a geographical positioner not a formatic one.

Tim and Eva will then work nicely and would immediately be better than the current morning programming on WHOM. Ethan is fine for this format; even perfect. Move Randi back over and have Alisha voice track POR. She already has a presence on that station and it would make a lot more sense.

You're already competing in the W25-54 demo to begin with, so there's not a radical change there. You have Q97 on one side of you and WHOM on the other side. If you are not willing to change the personel on the station, which is what this whole premise is being based on, you have to go after WHOM and not the Q. WHOM is vulnerable because of the reason I mentioned; the Q is not and you have the personal in place to do it.

Have I nailed it yet?
An additional reason to go after WHOM is signal.'HOM's signal isn't that good in the city of Portland, even non existant in some office buildings.Unless most people at work are listening on their computer.Remember the last version of KISS 99.9 musically. You'd grab a little of both 'JBQ & 'HOM.

Andy:

WHOM is absolutely the most vunerable station in Portland and really always has been. If I had my way, I would completely revamp Coast -morning show, on air, presentation, etc, KEEP the station Hot AC and change WYNZ to a Lite AC. WYNZ is not going anywhere. It's the Kansas City Royals of Portland Radio. It's time for....Lite 100.9 with Tim and Eva in the morning, Randi in middays and Chuck Igo for your Lite Ride Home.

Maybe so....but I disagree with your assessment of WYNZ, I believe they need to drop some of the early 70's and 60's stuff, and add more late 70's and early 80's. Sorry folks, but NOBODY wants to hear The Doors or The Beatles or that psychedelic shit anymore!!! That would make them just like WABK, a station that is tearing up midcoast / central Maine in the ratings. It's funny they run Tom Kent at night and THAT'S the music they should be playing ALL day!!!

And as for Chuck Igo, your not going to find a better morning host! His style, delivery, and personality is right up there with the likes of Bud Sawyer, and Bob Anderson, and other morning hosts that were solo, other than news and weather. He's very likable and he has a following on the station. Also I personally think it's about time to STOP voice tracking a station that's supposed to be bringing back the hits of Top 40 Radio heyday! Live personalty would go a LONG way in the format!!!

They already did that.......in the 1980s.......after killing off their AOR/Classic Rock incarnation as Z-101-Portland's Best Rock....

few comments, if i may..." Stop voice tracking"...you must be joking, right?. If you think for one minute that stations are going to start having "live" jocks, you are delirious. How could that person do the 5 other things expected of them if they were "live"??. Look for more syndication, not less. The mroning shows (Coast,YNZ) are "tired". Unfortunately, they have to go. You can't put them at different dayparts and expect something great to happen. It's like having a flat tire... you can move it to another wheel, but the ride still sucks. HOM is horrible, no doubt about that. I agree, someone should take them on. They are very vulnerable. As far as people not wanting to hear The Doors,The BEatles,60's rock...that music will never die. It may get "old" but it will always be there. It will be very interesting to see what changes will take place on Western Ave. They will happen, for sure, but as always, they will be the wrong chamges. And who is the one to balme for that??

Then, the money issues will present themselves. Alisha works because she's already in the building and can VT for no extra cost. Same with Ethan. Tim and Eva are what's at the center of the problems. But Saga HATES to fire people--obviously. Tim Wright isn't a Hot AC guy--obviously. Better off on YNZ? Eva has personality in spades, but isn't a Hot AC gal. I assume they have contracts. So, then what?

Well....dunno if he was fired, but Tim's out.

and this matters how?

Most radio sales are relationship based. I've seen AE's sell crappy ratings because they understand selling in general. Much like a sandwich, yoyo or automobile, buyers will purchase from someone they like and trust.

Also, absolutely NO ONE with a lick of sense would ever buy 12+ numbers.

Spoken like a true Dynacom/Vox/Great Eastern employee!
