Here in NE PA we had on WREC for a while via their stream. Glass half-full : Arbitron lists them as the top news-talk station in the market. Glass half-empty : They're something like 13th in the market, and trail an AM Gospel station.
We heard WREC do their Fox news thing, then into what sounded like a too-quickly done traffic report, a brief weather, and then back to the Glenn Beck show -- with someone filling in.
And after winding up here on the Memphis board, we find out that their transmitter is not exactly going to operate like a bouy. More like an anchor.
I've never been in the area, but I still have to question how a 'news-talk' station at the sweet-spot of 600 on the dial (and the only one on the survey list doing the format to any notable extent) winds up that low in the book. Their recent numbers have shown a decline, too.
Now, 2011 radio in Memphis can't be expected to support their own KYW or WINS, but one has to wonder how even the sole supposed beacon on the dial is going to serve and profit through this potentially historic situation. The numbers show that there hasn't been much interest or reciprocal faith there in the first place.
