So who got Sirius or XM for Christmas?

After spending five days and a trip from Philly to Pittsburgh with Sirius, I will never need to listen to the Philadelphia FM band again. AM, however, is a different story. I do not think the Sirius programming can compete with my need for local news, sports, talk etc. As a result I will continue to listen to WIP,WFAN, KYW, WNTP, etc.

What is amazing from listening to Sirius (so far my favorites are ALT-Nation, left of Center, Spectrum, and BBC Radio 1) is the amount of music a non subsciber to these services do not hear.

So did anyone else get Sirius this Christmas? Thoughts? In my opinion, it is completely worth the 12.99 per month

My wife gave me Sirius for Christmas knowing that after listening to Howard since 1982 I'd never be happy with any substitute. Beyond that, I have also felt alienated by local programming for years, mostly listening to internet radio at home. Coming from an older perspective, I love the choice of '50's through '80s oldies channels, classic country & bluegrass including WSM from Nashville, I can hear Ed Schultz again after WCOJ dumped the show, BBC and CBC, and all the classic rock and several 24/7 classical music channels missed since WFLN went away. I haven't begun to explore all the channels yet.

As far as Philadelphia area AM, I gave up on it completely since WPEN dropped oldies, WHAT dropped Air America, WNPV almost completely dropped live local news and the AP TOH news, and too many stations with boring syndicated talk, etc. Sirius channel 149 has Philadelphia traffic and weather every 4 minutes without mindless repetition of endless school closing numbers and tick tick tick headlines. After 2 days I don't know how I lived without this so long. If Sunny lives to November 2006 I might tune back for some Christmas music but so long for now (except to check on what's happening once in a while.)

No AM station in Philly is necessary since Sirius has traffic and weather by region. I don't care about sports, and I pretty much know where the shootings are, or I will find out on the TV. They could use a suburban NJ coverage, tho.

Got it.

Not so sure I am all that excited about all the wires and having some kid "with an excellent set of tools" at Best Buy pull out my car's dash.

I have come across a lot of friends (10+) who have recently received Sirius from either Saint Nick or Harry Hanukah.

WNTP - do they have local information?

FM DID IT TO ITSELF!

Last Christmas I got Sirius. No doubt it "crippled" my terrestrial radio cume. I found myself listening to EVERYTHING. A year into it and the music channels still haven't let me down.
My thoughts though are that if terrestrial stations where programmed as meticulously as the "Spectrum" and the "Vault" I would put up with commercials and possibly stop my subscription. Terrestrial radio has to admit that there research and there Wal-Mart way of programing, isn't working. YSP has pretty much all but given up and MMR where there intentions appear to be good, there music choices play more like the appearance that you are getting a lot, when in fact it is all the same thing all the time. (though specialty programing has been average for what you expect from MMR)
MGK is an absolute joke outside of the jocks, I am sure the jocks their would even agree. The Hawk wins by default it is ok but not great. Why is this, if you want to grab the music fan, you know the person who makes $40-$250, 25-54 persons/men, has a wife and one and a half kids. (hmmm sounds like a good demo) and a music fan. YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR HIM. Which radio never will till they start eating there own.. I hope Sirius and XM sends thank you cards to all the rock stations in the top 10 markets. They were there best reasons for people to get satellite.

You are probably correct in your assessment of terrestrial radio...however we have to consider that in order to pay the bills, terrestrial radio has to appeal to a mass audience, and they can not do so being too experimental. I wouldn't say that FM DID IT TO ITSELF, they must appeal to a mass audience in order to sell their product.

You may like rare Grateful Dead stuff while someone else would only listen to unknown tracks by Alice In Chains or Nirvana...etc. This is where XM and Sirius become beneficial.

Most stations could be considered "a joke" to the music enthuiast. I don't think you will encounter too much opposition by taking that position.

Well said...good stuff. I have been holding out, but I think I will purchase it soon. By this time next year I predict that a healthy chunk of posts here on this board will be referring to the programming heard on satellite radio.

That might be a good thing. This board could stand some additonal topics and formats in it's discussions.
