As we've all seen, there have been an unusually high number of stations changing formats in this region this year:
(new format in parentheses)

WGBT (became La Preciosa 94.5 2/16/06)
WFMX (became WMKS 105.7 Kiss-FM 7/24/06)
WMQX (became 93.1 The Wolf 10/4/06)
WRDU (became 106.1 The Rooster 10/6/06)
WRVA (still 100.7 The River but taking over the CR format from WRDU)

Of these, all but WMQX are CC stations (coincidence? I think not), and all but WRDU and WRVA are based in the Triad (although WFMX moved there from Statesville). Any thoughts on who might be the next station (CC or otherwise) to spin the format wheel? I have heard rumors about Whoopi and company invading WRSN after Christmas... any new word on that? Also, has anyone heard anything new on the fate of Triangle Sports Talk 1490/1090 (right now they are still broadcasting--- at least, WDUR still is; I don't know about WTSB--- but 620 The Bull is also mixing ESPN Radio programming with their local programming). One more question: If Sunny does indeed die after Christmas, does anyone know if its Triad counterpart WMAG will still carry on the all-Christmas tradition?
 
My pick for the next format change is WSMW Simon in Greensboro. What a dog! They're dropping like a rock. I think they'll do the Movin' format next. That station has been a revolving door for years and the current format just isn't getting the numbers that Brent Milar wants. As for WMAG doing Christmas music....
does a bear s__t in the woods? It gets them ratings every year. Why would they stop? Last year Oldies 93.1 did it too. Of course they won't be around this year.
 
Back when WFMX (now WMKS) flipped, former CC GM, Cheryl Solomon, said in an article in the W-S Journal that her next planned format change was WVBZ. I don't know if Dick Harlow has the same train of thought, but CC put that format change potential out in the public back in July.

She said there would be changes to the station itself....not a flip of WVBZ. There were STRONG hints that JB&B were toast on the Buzzard. Now that she's gone, we'll see what happens
 
WDUR 1490 and WTSB 1090 are on the air running all ESPN. Have not heard any news of potential buyers.

JB&B will continue to be on VBZ.
 
As much as the large companies are dumping oldies - because they say the can't sell it - I would think there is at least one also ran in the market who might give it a shot. I know there are several stations that would like to have 1.5-million in billing!
 
So which does anyone think will happen first: Sunny 93.9 spinning the format wheel--- which, with the double-barrel format flip of WRVA and WRDU last month would leave only G105 intact among the four CC-R stations--- or the Triad getting a new oldies station? This is getting interesting to see what happens next, with this wild flurry of changes to both the Triad and Triangle FM dials...

Actually, acording to the Miller/Kaplan report, Oldies 93 had over 4 million in billing this past year.
 
I wouldn't bet my beer money on the Wuff billing 4 mil in the next 12 months...

[/quote] Why in the world would they take on an established CC Country, when they were the only game in town on Oldies billing 4 Million? Was it a corporate dictate or did they honestly believe being the second Country would make them more than 4 Million? As Leno would say, what are they thinking with???

I dunno... some pretty good discussion about this in recent weeks on the boards, tho. Too bad somebody didn't get those listeners and dollars while they were ripe for picking(and the publicity was free). It's been long enough now that any newcomer's gonna have to unload some serious promotional bux, or trade their firstborn for tv and print.
 
Before corporate America got so heavily involved in radio it would have been common practice for someone to take advantage of this situation within days! Instead, managers sit on their ass waiting for an answer from headquarters because they have no authority to make such a change!

The oldies format is valid and there IS some good money to be made. Oldies had a 6.4 (12+) and over 4 million in revenue when they went away. How many stations in this area would like to have that?
 
Well, so far- none. 4th quarter- not the best time to blow up your billing. Now after Jan. 1... my crystal ball see lotsa surprises!
 
I would assume that 4-million was local AND national. What was the local number?

I don't know how the dollars were distributed, but 4 mil is 4 mil!

AND, if you'll recall, Entercom blew up Oldies 93 at the beginning of the 4th quarter and blew off all of that money. So much for waiting until January 1st. Will they make more by doing a flip to a more agency-friendly format? We'll see.
 
It makes a difference. To get national dollars you have to have ratings. To get local ones you have to have a staff of good sales people. My main point is this: a station with a marginal signal, the oldies format, and some good sales people could get a decent share of that 4-million if it is local money. if it is mostly national money, they have no chance.
