So Why Is Now 92.3 Avoiding The Big Pop/Rock Records?

Amp Radio 97.1 in L.A. seems to be a tad bit more open to play crossover Pop/Rock when compared with Now 92.3. Could it be b/c L.A. already has a heavily Rhythmic leaning CHR/Pop station in KIIS-FM? This way Amp Radio can broaden their sound to sound more balanced if need be.
Or maybe it's b/c Z-100 is the "perfect" CHR/Pop station and is more balanced? Perhaps a Rhythmic leaning CHR/Pop competitor is what will set Now 92.3 apart?
Or maybe it's b/c the 92.3 frequency has been associated for so long with Rock music that Now 92.3 is, at least for the time being, trying to get as far away as possible from that image. I think that's why they run the liner mocking Z-100 for playing Survior's "Eye Of The Tiger". Not b/c they expect the audience to associate that song specifically with Z, but to hint at the fact that Z-100 does indeed play some Rock hits, which Now 92.3 is trying to image as uncool.

uh...it's leaning rhythmic because that's the hole. Z already has the rock and end of CHR saturated beyond need. Rhythmic fans now know they don't have to sit thru Nickelback or John Mayer.

It also keeps distance between Now and Fresh.

Fresh can play Love Story or My Life Would Suck Without You. I think the latter doesn't fit on AC, but I vote with my radio dial and it stays off 102.7. Fresh can get the upper end of Z100's demographic and 92.3 gets the rest, as well as some of Hot 97 and Power 105.

nah, its just the whole rhythmic leaning CHR. I like the way 92.3 is sounding....minus the constant repeats. Leave the Pop/Rock hits with Fresh and Z. It's about time that NYC has a Rhythmic CHR....now just add some dance and we will have a NYC version of Toronto's Z103.5, but as of now, it's a version of Philly's Wired.

could it also be there are really no rock/pop hits that are top10-20 except gives you hell maybe im wrong here just saying ::)

Not a whole lot of those right now, but if you go by the national CHR/Pop charts on Radio & Records you'll find the following titles inside the Top 20:
Kelly Clarkson "My Life Would Suck Without You"
The Fray "You Found Me"
Taylor Swift "Love Story"
Veronicas "Untouched"

Z-100 has been very supportive of all these records. Then again Z-100 is one of the best CHR/Pop stations in the world, and is a model for countless stations.

David Eduardo brought up a good point in another thread that both NOW and AMP are targeting Hispanics (not exclusively of course). Having a rhythmic feel and not playing pop-rock like The Fray will give NOW an advantage with Hispanics. This isn't as true in LA where KIIS leans rhythmic. If KIIS was still playing pop rock like they did earlier this decade they would be very vulnerable right now!

Same thing happened with Radio NOW 100.9 in Indianapolis for the first 6 months.. Very rhythmic leaned, and the top 5 most requested songs every hour, and no recurrents or gold.... Luckily they broadened the playlist over time. I would say hot 97 has more to worry about than Z at this time.

Z-100 does very well both in the 5 boroughs and in the suburbs with non-Hispanic whites, Asians, and Latinos, and the same is true for (Rhythmic AC) 103.5 KTU. At least that's the impression I've always gotten. Besides, the Hispanic population of New York is very different from that of Cali. Puerto Ricans are pretty well integrated/assimilated with the rest of the ethnicities of the market whether it be someone of an Italian, Irish, Russian, or Chinese.
Hot 97 used to target Hispanics in its Top 40/Dance days though it was smart enough not to alienate anyone else.

Houston has a larger Hispanic population, percentage-wise, when compared with NYC (though not as big as L.A.), and it's predominantly Mexican just as the case with L.A. Yet Hot 95.7 has no problem playing the big crossover Pop/Rock records.

Rhythmic/Pop is just so big with everyone, especially CHR listeners in the bigger metro areas. New York is a very Rhythmic town so Now 92.3 is hoping to get lots and lots of listeners of all races.
I think it remains to be seen not just how Z-100 will react in the coming months, but also whether we'll see some music adjustments at KTU and Hot 97 over time.

MWC,
I agree Hot 97 might have more to worry about. Usually when there is a rhythmic leaning station in town it siphons away the Hispanic audience from the estabished urban/rhythmic. I would not be surprised if NOW inadvertently gets a large share of Hot's audience. Especially females 18-34.

Amp 97.1 leans just as rhythmic as Now 92.3 which suprises me since KIIS is a rhythmic/chr and LA has 4 urban stations. Not to mention their hispanic rhythmic station KXOL, Latino 96.3, basically another hip, hop station. Alot of rhythmic stations in LA.

Has 92.3 Now FM played Taylor Swift - Love Story? Didn't find it on yes.com but that isn't updated full yet as the bottom list shows a ton of rock songs on the top 100 list.

These days Rhythmic is pop. In 2008 there were something like 10 rock records in the year end top 50! Rock is clearly on hiatus for a while. The Rejects record is about as pop as rock gets right now! When the rock stuff comes back around, and it will, we'll see if Amp and Now, shift some! CHR sounds great right now, and the ratings all over the country prove it...About as good as CHR has sounded since it's 80's hey day!

Amp plays more Dance (like Alice Deejay), and songs by Taylor Swift and Paramore that have yet to be played on Now 92.3.
KIIS-FM also plays records by the likes of Miley Cyrus (they're all over "The Climb"), and recurrents by acts like No Doubt and Maroon 5. In other words, it's still a CHR/Pop station (much moreso then say Channel 95-5 Detroit).

And Love Story by Taylor Swift is #1 in just country and 92.3 Now FM isn't playing it. AMP in LA is so why can't Now. Don't tell me its because Fresh 102.7 is playing it so they don't want to play it on Now. That could be it. Has Now and Fresh played songs you would hear on both stations?

Does FRESH play "Just Dance"? If so that would be a song the two stations share.

Was just on yes.com and yep Fresh plays "Just Dance" along with The Pussycat Dolls news song "I Hate This Part" I wonder if NOW FM has played One Step at A Time by Jordin Sparks as Fresh does and I could see Now FM playing that song as well. As for one song I wouldn't see Fresh darn playing is "I Love College" as thats a song to leave to Now FM.

Edit: I see Now FM has not played that song "I Love College". But out in LA on Amp they are playing that song.
