So with all the flips in Boston.does Providence stay the same?

keep in mind that Boston was pretty stale until last year for better or worse looks like things are changing!! i can't see any providence station changing right now but to what? maybe b101 to a jack type format?

Well, forget Power 96.9 urban music fans and listeners who live near Neutaconkanut Hill and deal with the weak signal of Hot 106. 96.9 is still stunting, now dance, and most likely something different tomorrow. I would love it if the permanent format on 96.9 is Rhythmic AC as the signal covers most of RI and would finally give classic (and maybe current) dance, soul, and R&B music fans something to listen to besides the mostly classic (rock) hits on B101 and 105.7 WROR. It would also be more upbeat and fun to listen to than Coast 93.3 and Lite Rock 105. Let's see what happens. The permanent format may debut on Monday, January 7.

They mean people lose their jobs, and as we've seen over the past 7 years or more, those jobs are rarely replaced in the same numbers that they're eliminated.
You know what happened when my station flipped formats? 5 of us were out of work, and not a single new employee was hired. Exciting, huh?
Aside from that, there aren't any FM's in Providence that are performing poorly enough to justify the investment that a format change requires... even a bare-bones format change.
If anything, I think you'd see a tweak of SNE to a little more straight-ahead CHR, but I'm not even holding my breath on that one.
There's no lame duck in Providence that needs to be killed.
As for the AM's, it's kind of a "if a tree falls in the woods and nobody's there to hear it...." situation.

I think if CC were ever fool enough to mess with HJY, you would see the same kind of gradual change you saw with B101. It would start with the music then spread to the staff. While HJY is still playing a mix of classic and current rock, they seem to be playing more classic rock titles than newer rock these days. Maybe two current songs an hour, with two or three 90s/2000s songs per hour, and about six or seven song from the late 60s/70s/80s.
I'd imagine that some changes are going to have to happen at HJY eventually. Both Paul and Al and Charles have been with the station for over 20 years. Hopefully, if either are let go, Clear Channel would have the decency to let them say goodbye.

Thankfully, Paul and Al are not going anywhere. They just signed a multi-year contract extension (I believe it was for four years) back in August. I hope that Charles also has a long-term contract, or will soon be extended. At 'HJY, the two most important dayparts are filled with Rhode Island Radio Hall of Famers. And if I am not mistaken, next year, Paul and Al will mark 25 years on 'HJY. Charles will be closing in on 25 years soon after.
Jacko, I completely echo your observations about 'HJY's musical direction. They seem to play maybe one current track an hour, and said current track usually has some sort of "Classic" feel (such as that oft-played Chili Peppers song). I would have thought that Battle would play more harder/modern tracks at night, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Nonetheless, I love the fact that 'HJY remains a throwback to the days of personality-driven FM radio that plays music. Someone at Clear Channel recognizes that and has looked out for 94 'HJY. I hope very much that 'HJY will retain its personality-driven character.

Charles paired with Laurenti and Troll made for great radio. Charles by himself or bouncing thoughts off a producer is lame. He needs a good straight.

Kenny, I am guessing you will disagree, but I want to see the preservation of Hot 106 for one reason: To avoid the trimulcast of WPRO (an FM signal for the southern part of the state and an FM signal for the northern half).

It's all going to boil down to economics. If the Cumulus cluster can make more $$$ with 106.3 keeping a seperate fomat from its cluster-mates, then 106.3 could stay as is. If the answer is "no", and 106.3 is made part of a "trimulcast" with 630 and 99.7.....that raises a whole other problem:

I'd rather see them sell 106.3 back to WOON. Probably won't happen in my lifetime but I just wanted to say it. As for ESPN, I can imagine CBS Sports Radio would end up on 630 before ESPN as CBSSR is a Cumulus product. I don't know where ESPN could go but I'd like to see 1340 & 1450 back to being locals.

But seriously...The Disney Company has been known to spend money for what it wanted. Remember years ago when they bought 1450 for its "Radio Disney"?....Disney did indeed spend the $$$ needed to bring the technical facilities of 1450 right up to par.
IF 106.3 flips I am sure it would be (ugh) Country... It would help knock down 'CTK'S numbers (so Lite or Pro could be #1 in market). Plus the rumors of 94.7 in NYC becoming a hub to a National Country format would make a logical dumping place in RI on 106.3. MAYBE at least they could call it KIX 106 again! LOL!
