So, you ask, what does their playlist look like in Honolulu?

wow! More reason to go there.. even more reason to be pissed at KTU

Apples and oranges. KTU can actually be heard in its entire market. This is a new Dance station at a mere 100 watts, which might soon have to move to a different frequency (or cease to exist altogether).

100w can cover a nice piece of real estate... and I would know :p I just looked at a map of Honolulu via map24.com. Without knowing where their ariel is and how high it is, I'm still gonna bet they have no trouble covering the city.

Cain FM covered ~10 miles @ 100w, more if you include fringe areas, with an ariel that sat on the roof a 2 story house :) On lucky days you'd catch us squeakin' thru 25 miles away! I would think they are getting better results based on height of the ariel. It sure is better than 0w!!!!

I don't know if you are familar with Dallas, but we had a few test b'casts from my old 4-story apt. in Oaklawn last summer. Coverage was very nice/decent inside the I-635/LBJ loop ;) That's a hell of alot of people! Outside of it we faded pretty quick...

Too bad LPFM is more of a dream than reality... I'd do anything to be up and functioning again :(<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by julesism on 03/17/06 05:47 AM.</FONT></P>

100w doesn't sound like much but unless the radio-locator website is mistaken, Energy AZ's translator at 92.7FM is 10w and can be heard throughout almost the entire Phoenix metro on car stereos.

That's because it's not 10w. ;)

Don't forget-- FM signal strength is not only dependent on wattage, but also tower height, manmade barriers such as buildings, as well as geographic contours (hills, dips, dales, mountains, rock formations).

If the transmitter is placed on a high point with very little barriers, the signal can travel pretty far. The former Energy 88.7 WLUW in Chicago broadcasted a dance format from a 100 watt signal atop a 19-story residence hall at Loyola University Chicago's Lake Shore campus, which is at the far northeast end of the city along the lakefront. The signal traveled to the entire north half of the city, plus most of the north shore and suburbs.

Of course, Hawaii is not flat. There will be parts of the island where the signal just cannot be heard because a mountain is in the way, or the signal just flies too far overhead when you are in a dip or dale.

Great frequency though. Great location, too. I just found out where the transmitter is-- east of the airport, just northwest of the center of Honolulu. This station should be able to make some waves! (No pun intended for those surfers.)

HOWEVER-- it is classified as LPFM, which may require it to go non-commercial. Not a lot of revenue can filter in without commercials. We'll see.<P ID="signature">______________

To get back on topic, I think it's a very solid playlist for FM.. Let's hope this station does well. My only complaint about the list is that I dont see either Ferry Corsten or Judge Jules songs in there.

A 100 watts can go far JD is right. Its the height that matters the most. I ran a 100 watt station which had great reception in a pretty decent size listening area. We are also talking about an island. JD made mention of it being non-commercial. The station can still draw in a lot of money ask Jon McDaniel or NPR about that one

It's nice to see all the friendly comments. Thanks for the nice remarks about the playlist, too. It's a real honor to be programming a medium-to-large market like Honolulu. The tracks you mention below and many others are in constant consideration for adds on the station.

Mostly what makes me happy, is that people can finally pick up great dance music in traffic in another big town. It's really a great thing to be able to offer some great music to these folks.

I support dance radio tremendously, but that is probably one of the fugliest radio websites and station logos I have ever seen. Good Lord, somebody help them out!<P ID="signature">______________
