Good Grief.....Its a lazy programming move to pull this...

Well for me, about a weeks worth of solid Christmas music up to Christmas day, is reasonable. But you're right, when KVIL starts it a month and a half before Christmas day... :p

R

But now, add to the holiday fracas, the race to Chris-ma-thon (catchy, huh :)). KVIL started the good times, but evidently with all of KLTY's promotions of Marconi, they lose interest in programming during this month. Last year, KVIL hit the switch one day before KLTY... the day after Thanksgiving

Can't turkeys get any mourning these days? ;D

Don't forget your own KEOM, Robert! Peppering in of holiday music a few weeks ahead of time, then full-force that week beforehand. I dunno, I tire of Christmas music pretty quickly, but I know it's a quick, easy ratings-grabber for K-Ville. Honestly, tho, I hear KEOM played in all the department stores when it's running it wall-to-wall...and NOT KVIL! Funny to hear The Recipe File while shopping at the mall.

And what about 2001, when stations thought running Christmas music in early November was a great forget-your-troubles effort after the dark days of 9/11?

Perhaps it's time already for our annual predictions (8th year now) of who and when...Anyone recall the strange, anonymous post here so many years ago that started all this? It read like,

"I predict that KVIL will begin playing Christmas music on November 20, 2007 at 12:55AM."

(To which I say, "I predict that I won't be listening to KVIL again until December 26, 2007 at 7:32AM.")

Not to beat a dead horse in here, but KOAI did it right, if I do say so myself.

They sampled random holiday music in their New Age/Jazz/R&B rotations through the month, but went full boar Christmas on just the week of. That with month-long holiday jingles and bumpers was greatness.

IIRC KVIL started it on November 15th last year, so I more or less expect the same this year.

As for "who all started this in this market?"

The answer is KEOM. The station always has done two full weeks of Christmas music, since 1984. Back then it was started around the first week of December, and continued up until KEOM signed off a couple of weeks later, for the holiday break. Then when KEOM started broadcasting during the break, the two weeks of Christmas was delayed until around mid December.

Then memories 96.7 came along and essentially stole it from KEOM, starting W2W on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Then a whole bunch of stations started it very early in 2001, to try and lighten the mood that was created by 9/11. It's gone downhill ever since.

And Mike, while KEOM does still continue the two week W2W tradition, we don't launch into it right away. We sprinkle in about three songs / hour, beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving. IMHO that's the way it should be.

Let us not forget KLTY. I predict Nov.12 "Veterans day" Honor the Vet,play tunes repeatedly we have come to regret";)

Right after midnight Xmas eve to Xmas day, one of the last (if not the last) holidays before the Move, the Oasis played the full Nutcracker Suite. Uncut, uninterrupted (no DJs, no ads). It was something I might have expected from WRR, but not the Oasis. Excellent. Definite greatness on the jingles/bumpers/IDs.

Heres my predictions:

KVIL: Week of 11/11
KLTY: Mix in 11/23, full blast week of xmas
KDMX: Same as above
Sirius and XM: Channel programming will go live day after thanksgiving

What about KEOM??

Same as usual... Sprinkling it in starting Friday after Thanksgiving, then solid around mid December.

You mean they don't have their own 365 day / year Christmas channels?

One of the very first jobs I had in high school was working at the County Seat in Town East Mall (I'm showing my age). I think I started in September or October and things were going great until the day after Thanksgiving, that's when the store manager put the Christmas music on. "It's from corporate, there is nothing I can do" she said, I tried so hard to destroy that CD but never succeeded. Since those awful weeks in that mall with that music I've never been able to stomach Christmas music. I resigned shortly after the holiday rush and never worked a retail job again.

Maybe if they were still in business I could call the Texas hammer and see if he can get me some cash.

Christmas decorations are starting to pop up at Town East Mall, and it isn't even Halloween yet. Could November 1st be "the day" for KVIL this year? :p

Have you been to a Garden Ridge lately? Good night, it's a veritable Winter Wonderland in there.

I was at Tar-Jay this weekend and they already have all the xmas lights and decorations out. Good Grief, I rememeber when the xmas season began the day after thanksgiving, not before halloween

No, I haven't. Thanks for the tip though... Guess I'll cross Garden Ridge off of my shopping list for awhile. ;D
