SoapNet to get same-day reruns of Y&R

Found this thru wost.org:

Young and the Restless To Run on SOAPnet
By Anne Becker -- Broadcasting & Cable, 3/16/2006 11:09:00 AM

Disney/ABC’s SOAPnet has acquired from Sony Pictures Television the rights to run the CBS soap The Young and the Restless. Y&R, the highest-rated soap for the past 15 years, becomes the first CBS soap to run on SOAPnet, which previously ran all the ABC soaps and NBC’s Days of Our Lives, also a Sony show.

Y&R will join the network’s lineup April 24 with same-day reruns running at 7 p.m. daily and in a Saturday-night marathon. The long-term deal also gives SOAPnet access to older episodes from Y&R’s 33 seasons for stunts and marathons.

SOAPnet, which targets mainly women 18-49 with reruns of daytime shows and original soap-themed programming, averaged 123,000 viewers during prime in February 2006, down 16% from last year. But Y&R, which the network has been after for years, could provide a big ratings jolt, given its popularity.

Same-day reruns of Days of our Lives, which have been airing at 7pm (ET) nightly up to now, will move to 11pm (ET) beginning April 24.

Yes, and... So?

Is this really news?
What's so unusual about SOAPnet re-running an off netowrk soap opera?

I believe it is news because it is the first CBS soap to be carried there.

(Also, a nitpick: "Off-network" refers to a program that does not get network carriage. What SOAPNet is doing is "repurposing" the Y&R daily network show.)
______________

Reportedly fans of the beleagured "Guiding Light" begged the network to get them on SoapNet. Thus was born the "podcast" ; the way that GL fans will be able to get their episodes.

The net won't allow GL to SoapNet..if for no other reason Mondays episode would air Monday night on SoapNet...but in several key markets, I believe GL isnt seen on the local CBS station until 2 the following morning...

I enjoyed reading this info, very much. Thank-you.
In Canada, there is still a fight to get Soapnet to become available, but it is still not an option.
That's ok though, because that's what the PVR (Personal video recorder) is for...
______________

Yez...I've heard that from a friend I know up in B.C. She's upset because she can't get SN so she can watch their Another World reruns. I've heard from several sources that AW was the most popular soap in Canada for quite a time.

Guiding Light is carried in all but three markets. In every one of these markets its either the morning run (all stations with morning runs are on the east coast) or afternoon run. No local affiliate is running it on the overnight at this point. The two markets I know of (someone at one of these stations told me there are three but I cant figure out the third market not running it) not running it at all is 13 KOVR Sacramento and 5 WNEM Flint.

Soap Net should find room for Guiding Light because this show is on thin ice and CBS is considering trimming it to 30 minutes and making Bold & Beautiful a full hour. Also if Guiding Light does get canceled they will make "Bold" an hour while giving only 30 minutes back to affiliates. Someone at KOVR has told me they may need to leave options for the 2 PM hour open in case Bold goes to an hour. They were told the network is considering moving Bold & Beautiful into the 3 PM/2PM slot in the event Guiding Light is canceled or cut to 30 minutes. Bold & Beautiful has very high ratings in most markets and indeed deserves an hour long slot. Guiding Light seems to be struggling with mediocre to low ratings in most markets. Still they are on the air until Spring of 2007 but I hear reports that if the network wants to they can cancel prior to that expiration. someone I know working at another CBS O & O has told me that their Management is also stressed about what is happening with Guiding Light and why ratings are so low for that show. Many local affiliates too are unhappy with the performance of this show.
