Social Media and Local Television News...

Do you think the use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Periscope) with local news broadcasts has helped, or hindered our local news media?

I know many news anchors are live periscoping as they broadcast. The first time I ever saw this event was from Stella Inger in Tucson and she live Perscoped as she did her newscast, and would chat with the viewers in between her shots and segments. She does it now on as part of her regular broadcast. I also know Fox 10 does it from time to time in the morning, too.

I have always enjoyed visiting this board and reading all the behind the scenes news in regards to personnel shifts and employment. Now with the use of Twitter many cast changes are posted there by the anchors themselves. Do the board members here use Twitter, and social media to keep up to current date with behind the scenes breaking news at local Television stations?

Thanks for keeping this board up and running. I do enjoy the topics and posts.

GMAZ and Wake Up Arizona are doing the "live" thing on social media every day.

So is Fox10 in Phoenix. The morning hosts and news readers mention their social media sites often throughout the morning along with their digital streaming news channel (News Now) but, based upon the comments I see on FB and Twitter, most of the return posts are just social comments (and I am guilty of this as well). Ron Hoon tends to post beauty shots on Instagram and when the weather is important it makes the videos and photos but not much else of any importance. I notice that more and more posting is being done by anchors and reporters on several stations and I am sure this is being driven by the media suits to try to improve ratings. It is nice to be able to dialog with the on-air staff from time to time but I don't really think it has much impact on station viewership.
