Social Media in Boston Radio

I can understand DJ's wanting to promote their shows on facebook and twitter, but since when is it ok to curse and call the mayor of the city that you work in horrible names?

Last week he was calling Barney Frank a drunk, in the past he's called Martha Coakley the "B word" - not to mention calling people (listeners) Massholes.

If you are on the air, and promote your show to people on facebook you should have a little more class. If you wouldn't say it on the air you shouldn't be putting it on your facebook where listeners can see it. Just my advice.

Yes the pirates are on social media, including the one at 102.9 which claims to have the call letters WCFM
"which stand for The People Choice" (sic; on their website), which comes as news to the folks at Williams
College who also have WCFM. (Well maybe "WCFM 102.9" is an LPFM, but they claim to have 2,000 watts
and claim to be licensed by the FCC...)

As for Barry he is outspoken politically, ranging from his criticism of AG Coakley over his Provincetown incident to his criticism of then-Pres. Bush a few yrs back on his site.
On Barry's facebook:

>>If you see Mayor Mumbles, just run him over. (I'm not actually advocating hitting an elected official with a car. Just dreaming of it.)

I suppose Barry could be a political talk host eventually. File under "The Isley Bros.--Fight The Power"*

*--the original version...I was surprised when I got a tape of American Top 40: The 70s from a tape
trader in Calif. and KOLA aired that song complete with UNBLEEPED "all this bulls---- coming down".
Casey and his staff back in the 70s didn't catch that?)

He's posting this on his PERSONAL facebook page, not his stations' facebook page, or even his show's facebook page which also exists.

There's no reason he can't say whatever the heck he wants on his own facebook, if you don't like it don't follow him.

If it was on a station account, that's one thing, and while any station can say what they want on a social network, the suits and the advertisers wouldn't allow it.

But on a personal page he can certainly say what he wants. I DJ'ed for many years both commercially and non-comm and no one has ever said a thing about anything I've posted on any personal social networking pages, nor could/should/would they.

He's right you know. Mumbles is an asshole.

He's right, but since when have private matters of public figures stayed private? Whose business was it when Tiger cheated on his wife? Whose business is it if Anthony Weiner wants to send pictures of his namesake to chicks on twitter?

Everybody has a right to do what they want... but when you have a public persona, it's usually a good idea to maintain the utmost courtesy, even in personal situations.

It's probably a good time to note that NOTHING on the internet is private or personal. NOTHING.

Menino sucks, Coakley sucks, and yes, many residents of this state are assholes. And all parties deserve the criticism they get.
